Ms. Marshall is on tour across the country with her husband, Leonard, to promote her book and the fact that Harper & Row has just picked it up. "The book's been out for several years and used extensively by 12 step groups and treatment centers in helping young drug addicts and alcoholics recover. But it's just been available through Hazelden Publishing by mail order. Now it can be found in book stores and is available to the public," Ms. Marshall said. "I wrote the book", she continues, "because I was a teenage addict and alcoholic. I abused speed and alcohol and was almost dead by 2i. That was when I joined a 12th step program and began to recover 18 years ago. I now have a BS in drugs and alcohol and have worked in treatment as long as I've been clean and sober." She explained that there are problems unique to the recovery of a young person that someone in their 40's and 50's do not understand-li- ke dating, parties, peer pressure, etc. "The object of being sober," adds Leonard, "is to enjoy life to the fullest, not have your fun end with sobriety." "I want people, young people, to read this. So I stop in every town and pass out bumper stickers and give flyers to the town librarian. "Joan Beal in the Beaver library seemed very interested in ordering the book." she added, "We need more information on this. I get a lot of kids on community service because of drinking". Thank You We express The flu season is upon us. The Southwest District ' ' Health particiDepartment requests citizen ' pation in infulenza surveillance. Anyone who has a sudden onset of fever, temperature greater than 101 , degrees, cough and muscle pain or tenderness is requested to contact your local health department, notifying them that you may have the flu. Although nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as bronchitis, laryngitis and sore throat indicate upper respiratory disease, these symptoms are not classified as influenza. However, the Health Department is equally interested in these symptoms as well. William Coffman, Health Officer for the Five County District, would like to encourage those who have not received an influenza vaccination that there is still time to protect themselves this influenza season. This year's influenza vaccine contains antigens of ATaiwan, ALeningrad and BAnn Arbor strains. These are influenza viruses that are reported by the Centers of Disease Control as being prevalent during the influenza season. Coffman advises immunizing the high risk, such as the elderly and others who may suffer from a complicated case of influenza, including children. The Southwest District Health Department has influenza vaccine available and provides immunization clinics weekly throughout the five county area. Contact your local health department for time and 1987-198- 8 place. our thanks to Sam and Marian Kersiek and family of the Beaver Nursery for the beautiful flocked Christmas tree so generously donated to us.
