It also has the potential of causing problems for those who aren't prepared for winter weather condit- 438-504- 7 d ions. Hypothermia should be a real concern of all outdoorsmen. This is the loss of body heat due to cold, moisture or exposure. It can occur at temperatures as high as 50 degrees fahrenheit if wet and windy conditions exist. We don't want to discourage people from fishing during winter months, we simply want people to be prepared for cold weather recreation. Things to be taken into considerawhen preparing for winter outings are as follows: 1. Dress for existing conditions, wear clothing in layers rather than a single heavy garment. This is an important point to consider. It provides the sportsman with flexibility to be able to shed layers of clothing as air temperature rises or add layers as wind or temperature conditions dictate. 2. Be prepared for emergencies. Carry an extra change of clothing for emergency use. If clothing becomes wet due to storm or perspiration change into dry clothing immediate- tion iy. A good point to remember is that wool is an excellent insulator. It will insulate even when wet, and will dry quickly. Remember to layer the clothing and try to have a waterproof garment on the outside. The following are points to consider in case of emergencies: 1. Don't go on an outing alone. If an emergency exists, no item of equipment can replace a good partner to assist you. 2. If you get wet, dry out immediately. Build a fire, or change clothing, drink warm liquids, get to your vehicle, and get warm. Remember that the first symptom of hypothermia (the only one that the victim will consciously recognize) is violent, uncontrollable shivering. If this occurs, take steps immediately to get warm. Drink warm liquids to heat. Beyond this replace inner-bodpoint you lose the ability to reason and think clearly and will get into trouble fast. Keep in mind the dangers of cold weather. Go prepared and enjoy the outdoors in this, one of nature's most beautiful seasons. y Leo G.
