Nell Smith and Gaytha Benson True Pioneer Marge Mackerell Some firsts in early Utah. From the files of the D.U.P. Dr. Jos. M. Benedict effected the first organization of the Salt Lake Medical Association at his home, and was one of the founders of the Holy Cross Hospital. D.O. Calder in 1860, organized a music house in Salt Lake City. Henry Phinehas Richards, in the winter of 1850, took active part in organizing the first dramatic company west of the Missouri River, and took part in the first play presented by the company, the title of which was The Triumph of Innocence,' and was presented in the old Bowery, then situated on the Temple block. William Jennings established one of the first tanneries here and was among the first to build mills for the manufacture of cloth. Horace Drake and one of his brothers, after coming to Utah, are said to have made the first two musical instruments in the Territory. These were a couple of violins on which, for many years, they played at Ogden and other places in the valley. Alexander McMaster was a rope manufacturer in Scotland, and after arriving in 1853, became one of the first rope makers in the Territory. John Farrington found employment in the Deseret News Office, in 1869, when he arrived here from England; but later moved to Ogden where he printed the first and second editions of the 'Ogden Junction,' now the 'Standard.' William Casto was one of the first fruit growers in Utah, and was considered one of the best pomologists in this region. Dr. Romania Bunnell Pratt was the first woman from Utah to go to an and Eastern College graduate in medicine and surgery. George Calder saw the need for a recreational area in Salt Lake City, and forthwith established one of the first parks in Utah. Calder's Park became a rendezvous for thousands of residents of this area. Ebenezer R. Young crossed the Plains in 1858, and then took up freighting over the prairies, making twelve trips across the plains from Omaha to Salt Lake City. He brought some of the first machinery for improved woolen mills. Samuel Pierce Hoyt, for whom Hoytsville was named, is said to have brought the first turning lathe into Utah, on which machine all the iron work in the Salt Lake Temple was turned.
