More careful planning for agriculture in the counties will be the central theme of the county agent's program for 5'eais to come, according to Director WilHam Peterson of State Agricultural college, who conducted an extension conference last week at Logan. The agents were urged to make a careful inventory of their respective counties to determine the number and condition of livestock, the amount of different crops grown and if other crops could be produced profitably, and emphasis was placed on a careful investigation of the water supply and how it could be put to better use. Tliey were also urged to make a study of the range; izz delinquency, indebtedness, how taxes and other ob ligations are oeing iiie.i,,.uiriikcjwjr rPintmmTiins: what the county has to buy and sell.... living conditions of the people and the health of the communities. The price of material and supplies for telephone use increased 200 to 400 during the war and most of it has come down only a Very Bttle, if any, during the present depression. .! I. do not Most people who have had their telephone removed get along without telephone service, for they use their neighbor's telephone. , i V ! j Atyrat 50 of the emergency calls received during the night come, from ; "telephone spongers'' who call from their neighbors. ; In many cases people pay dearly for not having a telephone, for, if everything is taken into consideration it costs more to be without a rteles phone than it does to have one. The average smoker or drinker gives out more money for cigarettes, tobacco and drinks in a year than it costs him to have a telephone in his home for the same period. One trip with the car may cost more than the telephone for a lifetime. A farm home, especially, is isolated from outside assistance when it has no telephone. For a few cents a day a telephone gives you protection which may save a life or thousands of dollars worth of property. It is not a question of being able to afford a telephone, it is a question of being able to afford NOT to have one.
