Show BEAR RIVER VALLEY LEADER, THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1929. LOCAL AND STATE FIRMS GIVE BUSINESS DATA Interesting: History Is Told, of Utah's First Stores And Factories Wilson Lumber Co. The Wilson Lumber Company, old- est and largest business house in the Bear River Valley, was organized in Bear River City in the spring of 1901. Charles C. Wilson, with a broad vision and keen alert mind, began his career as a lumber merchant with carpenter tools his only visible asset. Soren Thompson, his father-in-lafurnished $1,000.00 cash and became a partner. In 1903 the site was chosen for the Sugar factory and construction began. Mr. Wilson foresaw that the present town of Tremonton would be a better business center, so he came here and selected the location on which the company is now operating. At this time he sought outside capital and interested Mr. Eccles of Ogden who took stock in the Company. Mr. Wilson, with eye's ever on the future, hauled lumber from Dewey, He until the rail road was built. planned and laid out his lumber yard, built a small store and some sheds out in sage brush. He also built a large room over the yard drive way which was used as the first, and was for many years the only recreation hall of the new town. The Wilson Lumber Company began business in Tremonton April 14, 1903 and Sept. 26 of the same year the Company was incorporated. The following year Mr. Wilson built the present store and put in a full line of hardware. As the town grew the business grew and after a few years he bought out the Eccles and Thomp son interests. Through the years of business dealing with people of the Bear River Valley, The Wilson Lumber Company has endeavored to give quality goods and real service to all patrons. Honest dealing and fair prices have at all times characterized their business standard. y the Wilson Lumber Company stands as a monument to the vision and ideals striven for by its founder,, the first pionner of our city of Iremonton, Charles C. Wilson. To-da- Co. Gephart Stores Fred and In February, 1910, Harry Gephart and D. B. Holland located in Tremonton, buying the store of D. S. Lohr and operated under the name of Holland & Co. The store was then a small frame building 20 ft by 50 ft located where the Strand Tailor Shop now stands. lhe new firm soon lound it necessary to move to new quarters and the following year pur chased the building now occupied by the Tremonton Harness and Accessor ies Co. Almost at this time, Mr. Hoi land sold his interest in the firm to the Gephart Bros and Clyde Gephart joined the firm. With modern business methods being put into force the firm found their store room too small for their ever increasing business and in 1914 moved to their present location in the Midland Hotel building. This splendid large room has twice been enlarged because of the increasing business of the Gephart Store until today it is the largest store north of Ogden in Utah. The policy of this firm is to sell Utah products in preference to all others to employ Tremonton people, to help build up the community en courage home building and loyality to Tremonton, the Bear River Valley, and Utah. This firm has paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars for operating expenses during the past nineteen years. This firm now operates four stores, the other three being located at Garland, Utah, with Harvey Moore in charge, at Roosevelt, Utah, with De Voe Meldrum (a Tremonton boy) in charge and at Ephraim with D. W. Kirkham in charge. These stores have each year shown a steady increase in sales bespeaking for itself the fact of the straightforwardness and fair dealing of this firm, and of the confidence of the patrons in the lines of merchandise they deal. In March of this year, the Tremon ton store added a fresh meat depart ment to their already large store and placed the meat shop in charge of "Bill" or Gordie Totter, and Herman Landvatter, the grocery department. All four stores are run on the co operative plan and this plan has proven very beneficial both to the employees and public. The sales to May 15th have been larger than any previous year and the year 1929 should be by far the best year this firm has ever enjoyed. " J. C. leading agriculturists and stockbreed ers.
