We have put a lot of hard work & effort into making this newspaper one of the best weekly newspapers in the country. With pardonable pride, we believe we have succeeded in this effort in some ways. It is difficult to accomplish fully one's objective in the short period of 12 months but some interesting facts about the progress of THE MIDVALE SENTINEL during the past year can be revealed. DRAPER COUPLE LEAVES ON EXTENDED VISIT Mr & Mrs Stewart Leigh of Draper left Sunday for Cedar where they were the guests On Jan 1, 1949 the newspaper had a paid in advance circu- City of Mr Leigh's narpnts Mr A Mrs lation of approximately 1,000 with a total circulation of 1,306. However, the paper's total average Taber, Canada where they attended marriage of their son circulation for the 12 month period ending Dec 31, 1949 will be Reid, the a recently returned miss- in- excess of 1732, the figure filed with the Midvale Post Office last October. These figures do not include newstand sales. So PHONE from the standpoint of subscriptions & total circulation we have made some progress & are glad to turn these additional subscriptions over to Mr & Mrs Barrows. It is interesting to note also that the increase in paid subscribers was accomplished even though we found it necessary to raise the annual rate from $2 to $3 for new subscriptions & from $2 to $2.75 for renewal subscriptions last June. This step was forced upon us to meet rising costs & to pay A our employees a fair living wage. - Midvale 11 For Furthermore, in order to produce the type of newspaper which we believe this community wants & to. which it is entitled, we foand it necessary to increase the advertising rates very sharply. Such an increase never could be popular from the advertisers' standpoint. Nevertheless, we continued to receive the best of support from our national & local advertisers. To name all our advertisers would require too much space but we are sure our readers know who they are & are appreciative of their efforts &r payments which make the very existence of this paper possible. So it all ads up to the fact that with respect to advertising revenue & even advertising lineage, we can turn the paper back to Mr & Mrs Barrows Dec 31 with increased volume over what it had on Jan 1, 1949 when we undertook its publication. The lease agreement referred to at the top of this column was for a period of one year with a stipulated monthly rental which has been fully raid & has never gone past due. The lease agreement also contained a provision whereby the owners agreed they would not enter into competitive business within a radius of 10 miles of Midvale. For a seperate & additional consideration paid to Mr & Mrs ? ?hrwa we obtained an option to purchase the business. After having f put considerable effort & money into THE SENTINEL during the past year, whether or not to exercise the option has ( been a difficult decision to make, particularly since it appears that we might be on the threshold of reaping some of the benefits of ? our long hours & hard work. We have reached that decision. The decision is to return the business to Mr & Mrs Barrows. To assure subscribers that the decision does not in anyway suggest any default in any of our obligations to the owners, nor give any inference that the business is not going well, it is deemed advisable to make a disclosure that otherwise might not be made. Mr Barrows has requested both orally & in writing that we refrain from exercising the option to purchase & return the business at the close of the year. The subscribers & advertisers are entitled to know that the non exercise of the option to purchase is without any legal compulsion. The option privilege, for which a sum of money was paid, will be allowed to expire voluntarily. It is believed that the business is in an even sounder condition than it was a year ago when we took over the property. Mr Mrs Barrows have resided in Midvale for years. Naturally, they have built up a personal sentiment for THE SENTINEL. Certainly they should not be criticized for wanting to be restored to the business which they developed & to which they have an attachment as one would his own home. While not obliged to return the paper, yet if we should exercise the option to purchase, we might be subject to some criticism from some of the friends of the Barrows who would share the disappointment if the dreams of Mr Barrows to return to the control of the business could not be realized. In one letter Mr Barrows has said, "WE DO WANT OUR PAPER BACK." If we answered "no" & if Mr Barrows again desired to go into the punting or publishing business, he would be compelled to stay outside of a radius of 10 miles of Midvale. On the other hand, we didn't assume any such restraint in the . event we decided not to exercise the option to purchase. Accordingly, effective Jan 1, 1950 the publication & job printing business done under the name of THE MIDVALE SENTINEL & which hase been conducted by the undersigned during the year of 1949, reverts to Mr & Mrs Howard C Barrows to whom we extend our best wishes for a happy & prosperous t--3 coCnia "ryl 1 cow TMwotu yum I! f 1 ) I ft "'ViEjEy e'' IT7 ionarv for the Church of Jesus! eown also featured a lnrnr finw. gays of pink & white carnations Christ of Latter Day Saints, &Ung skirt.
