The emotional action of an in dividual changes & grows as he matures, Mr Mickelsen said, adding that if person is to ma ture .lully the emotional urges of childhood must be outgrown. Dependency of the child on the parent is bad for the child, Mr Mickelsen said & urged parents to give a child every chance to mature & grow as an maepena ent individual. "Don't tie them to your apron strings. If you expect them to grow you must let them try their wings," he said. He told his audience to be ready to expect dif ferent things from children at different ages. The speaker stated that if a boy 15 doesn't seek the compan lonship of boys his own age, there is something amiss with his emotional makeup. When a child reaches high school age without having made a voca tional choice, the parents have good cause to be concerned, the sneaker continued. As a way of illustrating the development of the emotional patterns of an individual, Mr Mickelsen contrasted the be havior of children at different age levels. Comparing the temp erment of a two year old child with that of a 10 year old child, the speaker pointed out that the two year old is jrustratea m at tempting to solve his problems, kicking a toy or throwing it, while the 10 year old takes the trouble to analyze his problem Mickelsen said that when 2 a Mr tea 21 year old adult gives way to such action as .kicking a car that fails to run he is reveal jing the emotional characteristic of the two year old. He said that sucn an outDurst is not neces jsarily serious unless of course the adult continually loses him lay-awa- y self to such outbursts. Mr Mickelsen advised parents to teach children, to face facts in adult manner. Explain to them, he said, that when a problem can't be solved they must ,"grin & bear it." He told his audience that a child must feel secure & loved before he can take criticism as ,it is intended. Unless children have this sense of security they will resent any overtures on the part of the parent he said. He . warned that unless there is af fection in the home the parents can expect the children to be emotionally unstable. If a child learns that "it pays" to become enraged at four years, he will develop a rage pattern jthat will follow him into adult-jhoothe speaker said. "Being a parent is a serious problem," Mr Mickelsen said, adding, "The child sets his own home pattern from your home. If the child learns rage in childhood & doesn't outgrow it, he is the fellow who flies into a rage when he can't get his own way when he is older." He warned parents not-t- o give 'in to the child at times when 73 North Main Street Phone Mid 911-he shows feelings of rage or holds his breath or. cries for something that he is determined i to have. "We must give him the problem, the understanding & the tools to use & if it's within his power to solve it, let him solve it," Mr Mickelsen saia. The sneaker continued, "uur own emoitional patterns will be copied by our child, we must oe natural & keep ourselves under control. A child never gets over seeing his dad in a maniacal rage."
