They say, "If the safety council in your community has been on its toes, it has already checked with your merchants as to the handling of safe toys & you won't have to be quite so careful in your selection, for the wise merchant will carry only the safest of toys for you. "But just to list a few helpful pointers for your Christmas shopping, here are a few suggestions. For the tiny tot, avoid small toys which may come apart & be swallowed, poisonous paint on any object, & stuffed animals with glass or button eyes. "For that explorative child, stay clear of anything with sharp Or rough edges which will cut or scratch objects with small parts, marbles, beads, coins & flammable toys that child can be curious, you know. "Shooting or target toys with small children may endanger their lives. Anything too large, too heavy or too old for the child may prove dangerous. Such things as air rifles, chemistry sets, dart games, bows & arrows, tools & electrical toys MUST be given & used under parental supervision away from the younger ones. That is the most important of all." The Low Down From Hickory Grove Washington Week Some time ago a national gazine called Marshal Tito, the dictator of Yugoslavia, "the most important man in the world." This may have been an exaggeration,- but the reasoning behind it is clear. Tito has been the first leader within the So viet orbit to break with the Kremlin & get away with it all others who have tried it have been liquidated without a delay, as in Czechoslovakia. If Tito can continue to get away with it, & if Yogoslavia remains independent of Russia, it will be, in Walter Lippmann's phrase, "a windfall for Italy & the western powers." Americans will make a grave mistake if they think Tito's action is the result of a change of heart so far as communism as a principle is concerned. Tito has been a revolutionary & an underground fighter all his life there can be no doubt but what his guerilla activities during the war were of great service to the Allies. He is tough & able. At the same time, he believes passionately in Marxian principles. His break with the Soviet Union was primarily caused by two developments. For no matter what the weather is outside, picture taking wheather inside the house is as near as the nearest light switch. Regardless of what type camera you own, you too can make indoor . Foi the sweet potato is not truly a potato but rather the genealogy of its plant trails along with the morning-glor- y vine. The sweet potato loves a long summer and a warm one. The people of South America, southern United States, the East Indies certainly don't let it go unappreciated but eat and relish it. Take this delight of the morning glory family and make of it a dish that s inevitably sweet, but that also has substance and flavor. .t h. V v SEW TO SAVE Prepared by 1. Third, if you're using a time exposure or a comparitively slow shutter speed, make sure that your subject will be still. With babies or other restless subiects. you will want enough light to enable you to use a fast shutter speed. Fourth, be sure you know what film you're using. Different black & white films require different exposures. Color films generally call for flat lighting. Fifth, measure distance from lamp to subject. The light on your subject depends as much on the distance from lamp to subject as on the strength of the lamp. Unless you know this distance accurately, you can't be sure of proper exposure. Sixth, don't let light fall directly on your lens or be reflected into it from windows, mirrors or other shiny surfaces. beventn, measure camera to subject distance so you're assured of proper focus. Proper exposure too, when you're work- pictures. In general, there are four ways of making snapshots inside the house by daylight, by light from ordinary room lamps, by flash & by photoflood. Each of these methods has its advan tages & depending upon your camera, oners a means of enjoying your camera throughout the winter season. Each of these methods will be discussed here within the next few weeks. However, whatever method you use, certain points should be checked for each picture. Consequently you'll want to keep this check list handy for future use. First, as with outdoor pictures, look to see what's beyond your subject. Indoors or out when picturing people a plain background is best Where a distract ing background can't be helped, try to throw it cut of focus, or It will keep, light away fiom be out of focus it you use a ing with flash lamps attached large lens opening & shoot close to the camera. it |
