Summary: Recurring periods of rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains was reported from most stations of north western Utah during the forepart of last week. Accumulated amounts of moisture were extremely variable, ranging from little or none in south and eastern sections of the State to well over an inch at one or two isolated stations in the northwestern part of the State. Much cooler temperatures swept across most of the State accompanying the storm, but a rapid rise in temperatures was reported during the latter part of the period. Average temperatures for the week ranged from 1 degree below normal to 8 degrees below normal. A hail storm June 18 riddled leaves of corn, sugar beets, winter wheat and other crops jn Crop-Weath- Davis, Weber northern and southern Box Elder Counties. Damage was also noted to sweet and tart cherries. Weather in other areas allowed a good deal of work to be done with 5 to 6 clear days last week. Winter wheat was in fair condition. Some was lost to hail but most of the State was about 80 percent headed out with about 25 percent turning color. Field and sweet corn, though behind schedule, was beginning to make rapid progress. Harvest of first crop alfalfa hay made good progress-near- ed completion in most counties. Spring planted small grains were going into the of 40 to 45 head stage-abo- ut of the oats and barley and 60 spring wheat. Soil moisture was short over most of the State but feed on nonirrigated rangelands now in use was adequate though maturing rapidly. Fire danger s of was high. About range stock had been moved to the higher summer ranges. Winter Wheat Mostly in Fair Condition: Despite set backs such as extreme dryness in Central Utah, hail damage in north western areas, and completion with weeds in San Juan County, winter wheat was rated fair. More than 80 percent was headed out, was turning perhaps color. Some of it may be turning color prematurely in Utah and Ncphi Counties as moisture was sorely needed on the nonirrigated acreage. A hail storm June 18 caused a lot to go down and destroy some grain in northern Davis, Weber, and southern Box Hder Counties. Weeds were growing rapidly in the south eastern producing area competing with the wheat for moisture and growing space. Yield and harvesting problems are expected in that area. Spring Planted Small Grains Heading Out: Recent rain in have north western counties helped a lot in pushing spring-plante- d small grains into the head. Hail damage again has set those crops back in Box Elder, Weber and Davis Counties. By the end of the period perhaps 60 of the spring wheat was headed out, except in San Juan n:mLy; eaVJ County where wet fields delayed plating and stands were only about 4 inches high. Oats and headed barley were 40 to 45 out, apparently somewhat behind spring wheat in development. Stands and yield prospects looked good in Garfield and Kane Weber, Cache County Range Feed and Sofl Mbtatwe Supplies: Soil moisture---i jKr4r-rigate- fyi'tiA jt proximately cattle and sheep have already been moved onto the high summer range. Water supplittj- ""; ' it mostly adequate. Fuel Supplies: Garollne Diesel fuel supplies contiafctt mostly adequate throughout tjte State but were gradually ttgfoei- ing up in a few more counties each week. Box Elder, Rich, San ' -- Juan, Uintah and Duchesne Counties joined the rank of those counties finding diesel fuel harder to get last week. PfN 35. Turkish chamber I. Lines 37. Ardor 5. Distant 39. Condition of Field and Sweet Com Rated Good: Growth of field and sweet corn has been slow thus for this spring but was gaining momentum. The hail storm on June 18 riddled leaves in some of the Wasatch Front Counties. Warm weather was needed after moisture recently received in Box Elder County. First Crop Alfalfa Hay Harvest Continues: Reasonably good weather allowed hay harvest to make good progress during the week most counties were from 80 to 90 percent completed. Some counties were below that level and of course Washington County was well into the second cutting. Most hay was of good quality. San Juan County producers were spraying for weevil on second crop.
