Services were conducted Olpin Mortuary. by THE BEAVER PRESS I Manderfield 1 By Gail Bell Did you ever sit daydreaming at your desk in school and tear off a slim strip of notebook paper and roll it into a tight little scroll? Perhaps while doodling with paper you rolled the end with a pencil and then rolled up the other end to meet it. If you did, you were unconsciously doing an ancient artform. The artform is called Quilling. It has been recently revived, and most people refer to it as a new art, but actually it dates back to the time of Hnery the VIII of England, and flourished during the Renaissance. The word Quill has many meanings, but one is to flute or curl the edges, or form a ruffle. During the Renaissance, or the "waking up" of Europe, many artforms were begun. Quilling is a delicate, colorful, laccy art that is used today to form pictures or objects by themselves; it is also to enhance borders and frames. Special Quilling paper has been manufactured too, and small tools prepared, but the art may be done simply with a nail, pins, toothpicks and the pencil. The paper is inexpensive and comes in beautiful vibrant colors. There are several basic scrolls used, but as in all artforms, the sky is the limit for creativity. It seems that just about any shape can be formed and filled in with these lovely delicate rolls of paper. I was really nervous about trying it for the first time, so, as usual, I hid out in a back room when no one was at home to experiment with a pattern so I could throw it away or burn it and no one would see how awkward I was. It was soon apparent that even with shaking hands, one can form these tiny little loops. (Some at first). With were a bit a bit of practice, it really is easy! Also, men, some of the best scrollers are MEN. (Don't tell the girls). Try it, you'll like it. NeWS. Mr. and Mrs. LaVoy (Desma) Maycock had two of their grandchildren with them for three days.
