THE WEEELY PRE SS DEVOTED TO THE MINING AND AGRICULTURAL No. 12 Beaver City, Beaver County, Utah, Friday, Januaiy 28, 1916 Vol. XII Much Activity in Sheep Rock Vicinity Extensive Developments are Being Planned for the Early Spring. Numerous Properties in Operation. In spite of the heavy fall of snow development work continues at a half dozen properties in the vicinity of the Sheep Rock mine, five miles east of Fortuna. Among the properties on which development work is proceeding are the Braver Gold, Rob Roy, Beavor Botte, Gold Hill anu Keystone. Tne Beavc: .Butte force is crosseutting to intersect a copper ledge that shows values on the surface ranging from 20 to 40 per cent copper above the proposed point of intersection, At the Keyptone they are just starting a shaft- - and are now down about twelve fe t. They have two feet of gold ore. ' At the Gold Hill a shift of men are running a tunnel on the vein toward the poin; above which a five foot bodv of ore was recently disclosed on the surface running from $4 to $15 per ton. Since they began tunneling the quartz has widened from a stringer a few inches wide to a body several feet in width. Farmings in gold estimated as high a3 $200 per ton are sometimes secured. No work is now being done at the Sheep Rock mine pendinc the transfer of the property to the Beaver Gold Mines corpora tion, a San Francisco company. Col. William A. Farrish has just completed a thorough sampling of the mine for the final checking prior to the transfer of the properpty to the purchasers. Granite Copper Company to Shift Ore News was brought to Fortuna, to the effect that there has been a notable disclosure of ore in the Granite Copper mine five miles west of the gold camp. Four to ore of five feet of silver-coppbeen has a snipping variety opened up by A. L. Fothering- ham, wuo recently leased the property, and the lessee is taking out substantial quantities of ore every day and is preparing for continuous shipments. The vein and ore body were crosscut 150 feet from the portal of a tunnel that Mr. Fothering-hawas running, giving the lessee considerable depth and considerable backs for stoping. Preparations ara being made to transport the ore to Milford ' by way of Adams ville. The ground belongs to the Granite Copper Mining company, a corporation composed mainly of Beaver people. er Three or four barns were badly wrecked and several light lines were put out of commission last night with the terrific wind and sleet storm. The gale reached a velocity of 50 to 60miles an hour. It was the, worst storm re corded here in fifteen years. County agent H. A. Christian sen is attending the farmers round-u- p at Logan. Within the past six months the Newton Mining District has been visited, inspected and passed upon by some of the most eminent and experienced Mining Engineers of the United States, and one and all, without exception has pronounced the Newton Mining District "one of the greatest mineralized sections they have, ever witnessed. The present activity in the Fortuna section of the District is but a drop in the bucket compared to be wituessed within the next six what will undo'ib months. There has never been a time in the history of the United States when the possibilities for enlisting capital in Mining and Industrial enterprises were so favorable as the present. The National and State Banks throughout the entire country are overflowing with accumulated capital awaiting favorable investment. Every manufacturing plant in the east and west is working overtime; workmen are receiving the highest wa,ges ever paid. Farm products were never more plentiful, and they are selling at the highest price ever attained. All this portends but one thing: This County is "bout entering a period of prosperity such as never before experienced. There will be millions of dollars seeking investment, not alone from capitalists, but from the workingman and artizan. Citizens of Beaver County are yoa going to participate in the coming prosperity. Are you going to take advantage of the possibilities now offered you, or are you going to still continue to remain in a condition of innocuous desuetude? If the proper efforts are put forth by the citizens of of Beaver, by the Commercial Club especially, in a plan of 0 'operation with the officials of the Salt Lake Koute in a campaign of publicity there will be witnessed an influx ot inhabitants to this section vhieh will result in the enhancement of real estate beyond all conception, and the farmer and stockman .will be able to fill their coffers with the minted cold which will be extracted from the hills of the Newton Mining District. The significant occurrence of values in the Whalen lease in the drift northward from the intersection of the tunnel with the vein is attracting unusual attention. About a week ago the vein was encountered 125 feet from the portal of the tunnel and at a depth of approximately 60 feet. While a six foot body of splendid looking quartz was crosscut here no values were found and Hancock and Hoffman, who are conducting operation?, started to drift north on the vein in the hope of finding a gold shoot in that direc tion. A few days ago the quartz began to pan and a steady improvement in the ground gives every indication that an ore shoot is being approached. The face of the drifc today shows as fine looking body of massive quartz as has ever been opened up in the district. S. shaft and abont 160 feet north of the Davis Lease shaft. For three days there has been such a rapid increase in values the drift northward from the tunnel on the Whalen Lease that the entire six foot body of quartz is now rated as shipping ore, and visible free gold, that unmistakable signs of high grade values, has begun to appear in liberal quantities in the hanging wall side of the quartz body. The ore disclosure has every appearance of leading into a glory hole. Pannings from much of the quartz that shows no free gold are almost sensational. The strike is rated in Fortuna as a notable demonstration of the frequency of high grade values in shoots along the veins, and it is considered one of the premier events that will bring the camp to the forefront in a few months. It is going a long way to prove many optimistic theories held in the gold camp. It is the fourth gold shoot so far disclosed on the Davis Lead one at the Davis shaft, one at the U. S. shaft, one at the Whalen Lease and one at the Beaver Goldzone shaft, a half mile north of the Whalen Lease. These are held as strong . indications of a regular system of ore shoots. The Whalen ore shoot occurs at a vein crossing. This bears out the general theory at the camp that the mott likely place for the ore to occur is at the and it junction of speaks volumes for the future of a large district that is covered with a system of link fissures. There is sixty feet of backs above the present discovery, all of which will be ,stoped out as soon as the dimensions of the ore shoot are determined. Tne owners of the lease are Leon Goulet, of Salt Lake City, Edward Whalen, a Beaver coUnty mine operator, and Frank Hoffman, a Fortuna operator at present in charge of the lease. The lease has approximately a year yet to run. . cross-fissure- s, and timber, land reserved Jfor the benefit of the Indian?.
