Grandma Carpenter grandmother, Oral Harris Carpenter, was born Auguest 3, 1903 in Cedar Qty, Utah. Her parents were Ebenezer Harris, who was born In Adamsville, Beaver County In 1870, and Anna Elizabeth Hallman, who came from Sweden. Grandma was the sixth in a family of ten children, which had eight girls and two boys. She went to school in Cedar City, She "missed two years of high school when she was hurt in a car accident and fractured her hip. She was in bed for a long time and had to have a bone She went to school operation. part time on crutches. She star- -, ted to school at IDS Business College in Salt Lake Qty. Grandma had only been there a week when her mother died. Grandma had to come home and care for her four younger brothers and sisters. Grandma married Grandpa Dell Carpenter in Salt Lake Qty. Their children are Marilyn, Lee, Jack, and Boyd, my dad. Grandma worked in abakery, as awaitress, and in a drug store before she was married. Grandpa worked at the State Road, and at the Iron Mines where he became a supervisor for US Steel. Grandma had many friends. One friend was deaf and dumb and they used to spend many hours writing notes to each other. She had many pets when she was little girl; baby chicks, lambs, dogs and cats. When a pet died they always had a big funeral andbur-ie- d them around the garden lot. She loved to play hide and seek because there were so many places to hide like the old barn, potato pit, and around her Grandma Harris's old rock house. Her favorite food when she was little was a thick slice of homemade bread covered with cream and sprinkled with sugar. Grandma always had a special new dress with a pretty sash for Sunday and the Fourth of July. With seven sisters she had to wear lots of hand me downs. The nicest trip she went on when she was younger, was with her dad and sister. They wentby horse and buggy to Dixie to buy fruit for canning. They camped out by the side of a hay stack. Grandma's happiest Christ-mas- es were when she was younger and the family was all together. Her gifts were usually a doll and some candy, and sometimes a doll buggy to be shared with her sisters.
