Then he got into mining at Telluride, Colo. "That's where he robbed his first bank. He and another Mormon boy from Circleville, Elza Lay, went up to Telluride together. They got mixed up with notorious characters like Matt Warner, Tom McCarthy, Flat Nose George Curry and others. Mrs. Betenson said that the first time Butch was jailed at Montrose, Colo., "dad rode over on his horse to see what it was all about and tried several times to get Butch to straighten out and come home, but he never did." "He'd come to the house at different times through the years when he was being hunted, but always alone. Butch would come but none of the others. The family never saw any of the others. "In later years, after he was supposed to have been killed, he told the family he had the time of his life in New York City when he left the West to retire and run a ranch in South America. "He and the Sundance Kid Harry Longabaugh had a big haul they took with them. The Sundance Kid brought along his lady friend, Etta Place, a schoolteacher. "Butch didn't want the women to go along, but Sundance insisted. They went to South America and instead of retiring started all over again robbing trains and banks." Mrs. Betenson says she'. not sure what happened to Longabaugh, but does know that Etta Place later returned to Denver. "My brother did a lot of traveling the rest of his life under an assumed name when he came back to the United States in 1912. He never married. He worked as a trapper and as a cowboy.
