A recent ruling by the United States Suprere Court really blew the lid off on "Freedom of Speech" when it, in part, rul sd there could be no such thing as slander, etc., since to sue for slander would encroach upon the right of Free Speech. It forcefully brought home Voltaire's statement, "I may not agree with the thing you say but I will fight to the death for your right to say it." This is in no way to be construed as a barb thrown at any previous editor of the Beaver Press but is a simple statement of fact. As Steve Williams, previous editor of the Press "V-tchig Milford News as : Taper That Cares .r.r.itovd" sa it Is and it ul.l bj "Tha only Paper that Care:; About Beaver" is The 3.a3.ucr Press. The barn has now been encircled, the arrow put to the drawn bow string and the barbs on their way. However, this instance is of great concern as to where the arrows lall to earth. s" i -- There is a great need in any town especially a small town for a newspaper. There is the need for this medium of expression of thought editorially and commercially as well as to Tint news current and past. Mo:'t human beings are moral cowards, are mentally lazy and much prefer to drift with the wind letting someone else do their thinking for them. If this were not so then whole nations would not follow to destruction the leaders we have recently seen in Hitler and Mussolini. Even in the Bible we are called "Lambs", sheep would be a better name. Mister Editor, there is a lot of new interest in your paper. Readers are looking forward to the much needed barbs of Sam Cox and the wholesome, unrestricted articles by Mrs. Mackerell on Beaver. Since this expression is in the form of arrows shot into the air to fall to earth, I hope on targets, Mrs. Mackerell will be left with simply a sincere commendation for her articles. A newspaper, no matter how good, cannot live on subscriptions alone. The paper fcnust have advertising to make it go and this brings in the cycle. The larger the subscription list the easier it is to sell advertising and the more advertising the more the paper can extend itself for news coverage and local events. Here the editor has to sell his paper and the subscribers support it. Reader interest is important and if present policies are continued there will be increased reader interest The editor has the greatest obligation of all If he is to succeed and that is the unfailing law of the press that his paper must hit the street ON TIME and IN TIME. No merchant of business will long support a paper that publishes his paid adv. days or rven hours late. Those advs. are HT3 lifi line come HELL or HIGH WATER, death and cornel"',, destruction of the editor " V a'.nne exclud-e-- i. Beaver has two fin police officers IF they are backed up by the people and city council and are told to do their jobs. They have done good work and would do it again with backing If the people from higher-uand the council do not want police protection at its best, then do away with the prowl car ad the police officers, throw the town wide open and invite elements to the undesirable move in. Don't make a farce of an honorable profession even though it is overworked and underpaid. Let us put the governing of Beaver back into the hands of our representatives, the city council, and take it out of the hands of the Munl-clpl- e League.
