Lan LaJeunesse, a bareback rider and one of the top money earners in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association today, is accustomed to rough rides. After all, he makes a living traveling to rodeos and taming some of the meanest horses on the planet But the chance to strap 29,000 lbs. of thrust around his 5' 1" frame was something altogether different There really aren't words to describe it" said Mr. "I've been on LaJeunesse (pronounced some really wild bucking horses, but nothing compares with this. It was quite an experience." Maj. Kurt Gallegos showcased the capabilities of the 6 to Mr. LaJeunesse during a mission flown primarily over western Utah and the Utah Test and Training Range. When asked to evaluate the performance of his fellow crew member, Major Gallegos had nothing but praise to offer when asked to evaluate the performance of his fellow crew member. "He did a great job," said Major Gallegos. "I showed him everything the jet has to offer and he was still ready for more. Most people don't respond as well as Lan did during his flight" Mr. LaJeneusse has seen his fair share of professionals traveling across the country td compete in rodeos. However, his experience with the Air Force Reserve gave him a whole new perspective on what it means to be the best in the business. "I learned so much from this experience," said the Morgan, Utah, native. "The folks in the 419th are all hard workers, and they're all really good at what they do. much more They put so much effort into their jobs than we do when we're bareback riding." LaJeunesse is the 1999 World Champion bareback rider. He competes in more than 100 rodeos each year across the United States and Canada. In July, he won $13,383 by scoring 85 points in the final round of the Frontier Days Rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyo., which propelled him into first place and gave him the overall title. He is ranked second in the world among bareback riders on the professional rodeo circuit today. Operation Southern Watch was established by the United Nations coalition forces in 1992 when Iraq's President, Saddam Hussein, chose not to comply with U.N. resolutions. The mission was designed to protect the Shiite Muslims against attacks by Hussein's forces and to deter Iraq's ability to threaten its neighbors to the south, by patrolling Iraqi airspace below the 33rd Parallel. Since OSW's inception, coalition forces have flown almost 250,000 sorties F-1- nt er over Southern Iraq. Saddam Hussein continues to threaten the coalition air forces. Earlier this year, Hussein warned western planes to leave Iraqi airspace or face retaliation. Earlier this month, U.S. and British planes carried out a raid on Iraq's air defense systems in response to the recent Iraqi hostile threats against the coalition aircraft monitoring the southern no-fl-y zone. officials from U.S. Central to According Command, this year alone there have been more than missile and anti375 incidents of Iraqi surface-to-a- ir aircraft artillery fire against coalition aircraft in the two no-fl- y zones 36 Parallel and 33rd Parallel of Allied Iraq. planes have struck back over 20 times, with the largest raids being in February and August of See OSW, page B Passports required for members traveling abroad by Capt. James R. Wilson 41 9th FW Public Affairs Office 419th Fighter Wing officials are going on the offensive by traveling outside the continental United States. Considering the ongoing international dispute with Iraq and the presence of known terrorist groups, any overseas travel presents inherent risks to U.S. service members. As a result, the wing's leadership is requiring members to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness and lessen their vulnerability. Effective immediately, any 419th member conducting official travel outside the continental U.S. must possess a general passport for identification purposes. While wing members will have to pay money up front for individ-- , ual passports, a process has been established to allow Reservists to get reimbursed for this expense. The passport should not identify the individual as a member of the Armed Forces or as an employee of the federal government This is a force protection issue," said Brig. Gen. "Pink" Williams, 419th FW commander. "Our profession demands that we operate in an environment that presents certain risks to our members. This measure is just another example of how the 419th is doing everything possible to protect the people and resources assigned to us." To obtain a passport, individuals must first complete an application which can be obtained from the Ogden main post office. Each application must be accompanied by the following: (a) Proof of U.S. citizenship-Citizenshi- p can be proven with a previous U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate. A certified birth certificate has a registrar's raisedembossed seal, and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar's office which must be within one year of the date of birth (b) Proof of may submit items such as a drivers' license, federal identification card or military identification card to prove his or her identity to the acceptance agent identity-Individua- ls Portrait photographs-Tw- o photographs of the applicant are (c) required Each photo must be 2"x2" and should have been taken within the past six months to ensure a decent likeness. Photographs must depict the applicant from a frontal view and without a hat or dark glasses. Uniforms should not be worn in passport photographs. (d) Applicable fees The current cost for a passport is $60 which includes a $45 passport and $15 processing fee. In most cases, the passport will remain valid for 10 years from the date of issue. The wing is taking steps to alle -- viate the financial burden of obtaining a passport by inserting language into travel orders that makes the expense reimbursable. The bottom line is that any 419th member performing duty outside the United States will be expected to possess a generic passport when traveling," said General Williams. "Force protection is a command and individual responsibility. This is particularly true for our organization considering 419th members are performing vital missions throughout the world on a daily basis. We cannot and must not become complacent in how we go about our business." Department of State officials have advised that processing time for passports is currently averaging between four to six weeks.
