For example, someone with a cold sore can transfer the virus by kissing, just as active genital herpes is spread through intercourse. Or, someone with a cold sore can give a partner genital herpes through oral contact. During the beginning of infection, the herpes virus escapes the immune defenses by entering the nerve endings and traveling to the ganglia, (clusters of nerve cells). In the ganglia, the virus is inactive and it causes no harm to the body or the nerve cells. From time to time, however, the virus can be reactivated. When this happens, it travels back down the nerve to the skin surface, where it starts to multiply, causing another outbreak. Herpes is most easily spread when a sore is present, but it can also be spread when no signs or symptoms are visible. Jim Krueger, chief of the AFSA food service operations team. "By no longer keeping them confined to a computer system, we have given managers back the time it takes to run a facility," he said. Now, food managers will have more time to concentrate on presentation, atmosphere and customer service. These tested and proven standard menu meal plans will immediately improve financial operations, with meal card customers seeing the biggest benefit, Krueger said. d "We will be able to offer more selection as menus are expandexpanded, along with services such as ing." Krueger said. The menu expansion also allows managers to spend more time working with their people and improving operations, rather than simply trying to maintain inventory and working prices. "What we are doing is modernizing our business practices to commercially accepted ones used within industry," said George Miller, chief of Air Force food service. "Our food managers now will be even more compatible with industry philosophy as they purchase and interact with local suppliers supporting base needs." Once implementation is completed, officials hope to have all stateside Air Force dining facilities updated with the new software by Sept. 30. Besides providing pricing with nearby vendors, the system also keeps dining facilities' recipes with information supplied by nutrition experts at AFSA. "We can make good menus with sound, nutritional decisions, and send those to bases much faster," Krueger said. Plus, if local recipes or trends change, managers simply send a request to the central site. Recipes are then built and products are sourced as the site pushes information needed to offer new items to airmen. best-availab- le te Lavton Pain Clinic FULL SERVICE SOLUTIONS Computer Career sTEGRATIVE EVAPORATIVE COOLERS PAIN MANAGEMENT The Surgical Alternative SAVE ON ALL SIZES mile west of Hill AFB South Gate Approved by Veterans Administration G.I.
