Show Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1976 The Helper Journal 5 Veltri's five clinches 1st half tie Veltri Drug clinched at least a tie for first half in the local honors recreation basketball loop last week by downing in Chuck's Pharmacy, a game that was much closer than the final score indicates. The drug quintet, 62-5- Walter Borla, St off Writer defending champions in the league, needed a victory Dinos end skid, bomb 63-4- 4 Spanish Fork, A vastly scoring burden for the winners. Jewkes, the rugged southpaw from improved Carbon High cage squad shocked Spanish Fork with a 4 upset in Region Six basketball on the Dino court Friday night. The victory moved Carbon into a tie for fourth place in the league Kenilworth, finished with 14 points and more and more proved his worth in the Dino 63-4- lineup as a rebounder as well. Grundy, plaqued by foul trouble early, picked up 10 points before finally fouling out late in the game. Carbon's final total of 25 offensive rebounds was an indication of the spirited play Coach Evan Excell's Dinos displayed in coming back from a rather dismal showing in a midweek game at Uintah where they lost by almost 20 points. Spanish Fork is one team in the league that does not have a and greatly enhanced the Dino hopes for a state tournament berth in Class ranks. Carbon blitzed the Dons with a lead and never looked back after the first quarter. The Dinos were almost unbelievable in that standings 3-- 24-1- initial 2 period field while aggressive splurge, from the playing an of brand shooting 57 percent basketball. They cooled off slightly in the second quarter but still went out at intermission with a lead. Spanish Fork made a move to get back into the game during the third period by cutting the Dino margin to just nine points, Blake Bills led the comeback bid for the Dons with help from Roberts Foote and Scott Johnson, but the fourth quarter was a nightmare for the visitors. A tight zone defense by Carbon and Spanish Fork's inability to hit the outside shot netted the Dons only four points in the entire fourth quarter. In fact the period was just seconds away from being half over before Spanish registered their points on the scoreboard. Carbon's first half surge was paced by senior guard Jim Kulow who scored 16 points. The Dons keyed on the aggressive Dino during the second half to hold him scoreless, however, but Roy Jewkes, Scott Grundy and Bob Potts picked up the 42-2- height advantage over the Dinos and Carbon dominated the boards most of the way. Coach Excell will take his squad to Lehi this Friday night to encounter the Pioneers led by 6'9" 8 Evaristo over Rio Grande in a Monday night game to claim the title for the initial half.
