Not only have the commissioners been unable to agree on one of the six preferences supplied by the county Democratic Party, but they have been similarly unequal to the task of selecting anyone from the community with what they feel are the proper qualifications. Rachiele insists that Janet Prazen, the former commissioner's wife, would be the ideal replacement; Simone has named several candidates, including Helper resident Lou Trujillo, as OK by him, but he won't support Mrs. Prazen. There are two problems. The first is that an election in which the nominees come from only one party and in which there are only two voters has nothing whatever to do with democracy. All of our basic tenets tell us that governmental representatives should be elected by the people; a special election, as costly and time consuming as it might be; is the proper solution. This would require amending state The ' Wyoming. When Roybal failed to gain nomination in the 1973 contest, he filed suit in court district federal challenging the nominating procedure which required a candidate to be endorsed by five locals to be placed on the ballot. Perhaps one or both of them think the governor, who will make the selection himself if the commissioners don't, may be leaning toward their favorite candidate. But letting the decision go to Salt Lake would remove the selection of local officials . even further from local hands and thus would be an even worse way to resolve the situation. Presuming, that no change in the selection process is imminent, the commissioners should face the fact that they cannot read the governor's mind and that, even if they could, they would owe it to Carbon County residents to grit their teeth and make the decision on their own.
