Bates Regional Game Manager The elk hunt is well underway. It seems like the weather, the cover and other factors are with the harvest. connected Julius Spigarelli with a nice yearling bull. Some have had good luck, while others are still hunting. Almost everyone has seen elk to date even though they haven't got an animal. Some nice bulls were killed in the Muddy opening morning and an interesting observation is that herds of buUs were observed normally, they would be scattered, each indiv idual bull actively gathering a harem for the breeding season. Chukar season opened last Saturday and runs through Dec 31. Ken Bates and his party had fair hunting in the Nine Mile area. Rhy checked out several limits of chukars on the east side of the Green River. We have reports of good population on the Green River, between Nine Mile and Green River, & thru-ou- t the Book Cliffs. They are also fair populations around the Wist Water Ranch and the Castle Valley along Colorado River. Rhy reports good populations of cottontails in the Uintah Basin. They are plentiful and Duchesne widespread thru-oand Uintah counties. Rhy said they are especially plentiful in Dry Fork, over by Vernal. The cottontail is an excellent game animal and mighty tasty. Hugh says shore fishing on Scofield is picking up. He has checked several nice limits taken from the bank, that ran from 15 to 19 long. Sure does sound good. Ferron Reservoir and Willow Lake are good in spite of the freezing weather. Last Saturday .morning Ferron Reservoir was frozen almost completely over; however, the thin layer of ice dissipated before noon. These waters should furnish quite a lot of fishing before winter sets in. This Saturday the Forest Grouse season opens. We have both the Blue and Ruffed type in this area.
