We refer to the beautiful parks and groves posessed by nearly every city in the state. One need only ride up and down the highway to notice groves of magnificent trees, perhaps planted nearly a hundred years ago, but to which no attention has been given Value of Community Parks. in recent years. Here, particularly, every cent spent by the municipality in maintaining these improving and beauty spots will pay big dividGnds in tourist dollars as well as in human benefits. It can be easily demonstrated that in most highway cities, a reasonable expenditure of $2,000.00 or $3,000.00 can bring to the community an additional annual busi-es- s of $100,000.00. In private industry, any alert business man would welcome such a business increase at so low a cost. While buildings and fences have deteriorated over the years, these trees have steadily be-- ' come more magnificent. We have not appreciated them because they have become common to us through proximity, but to the traveler, weary af ter a long ride over desert lands, a green oasis will always be a welcome sight. ;New Motion Picture Locations !. techniIn viewing the beautiful color effects of Utah scenery as background in motion pictures, there too frequently arises the complacent feeling that motion picture,, companies must come to this state regardless of what we may do in the way of assistance. Such an idea is dangerous to a continuance of this splendid source of income and employment. It. Is true, as we all know, that Utah has been blessed with some of the greatest wonders of nature. It is equally true that much of our remarkable- scenery is still almost inaccessible. It will probably be a surprise to many to know that picture backgrounds, as with picture scripts, dialogue or settings, can quickly become obsolete. A couple of pictures in the same area is about the limit, just as a couple of variations of the came story will be about enough for the public. The challenge simply is that if Utah is to hold its place in with other western competition: states, so far as the picture industry is concerned, it will be increasingly important that many new areas, as striking as the more familiar ones, be constantly made accessible to the companies which bring so much income and into the employment state. Criticism has been made at times of public money spent in building access roads into new areas at a cost of a very few thousand dollars. The thought may have even occurred that the companies would have come into the state regardless. This is erroneous; it is even quite probable that Arizona would have received the benefitg of several hundred thousand dollars instead of Utah. It is doubtful that any competent business man would ever 'question the value of an investment of $3,000.00 for an access road that will bring into the state new profitable business in the amount of over $300,000.00.
