Because of iu seasonal distribution, this disease is. popularly considered to be a disease of cold ell- i mates. This is not aUofether true. for the southern states have a higher death rate from pneumonia than do the northern stages. New Mexico and Arizona have higher death rates from the pneumonias than does JJtah, which in turn has a higher rate than either Idaho or Wyoming. The pneumonias claimed the lives of 17 Carbon, 3 Emery. 1 Grand and 2 Ran Juan county persons In 1937. This is a total of 23 persons who lost their lives from this diaease in health district No. three; 2 J deatis in Utah in 1937 resulted from pneumonia. Diseases at the heart, cancer, and accidental deaths alone claimed more victims in Utah than did pneumonia. Pneumonia claims more victims every year thaji all other infectious diseases excluding influenza. There are two forms of pneumonia, lobar and bronchial, but this classification is a medical onethe same organisbs cause both diseases, 'so they must be considered as being similar. The pneumonias are not one disease, and many different type of organ-Ism- s may caase the disease. Ninety-seveper cent of all pneumonias are caused by the 32 different types of pneumococcl. Pneumonia is not one disease, but a group of diseases. Pneumonia begins when body resistance is lowered by some preceding factors. These contributing factors may be a prolonged illness, overwork, lack of rest, alcoholism, severe chilling and wetting, or any combination of these. The disease may appear suddenly In persons previously well, but usual HELPER. UTAH ly follows the common cold. The onset Is usually sudden, beginning with a chill or chilliness, ferer. cough, pain In chest, and bloodtinged sputum. All persons do not display all these initial symptoms. Pneumonia appears suddenly and immediately Incapacitates an individual. This is a disease that laata but a short time. Most victims are either recovering or are dead by the eleventh day. Immediate medical care is necessary to reduce tne severity of the diaease and to prevent death. When a person has any of the above symptoms he should Immediately go to bed and stay there and call his family physician Immediately. The physician should be called en rlv when Dneumonla s suspected, because early treatment is essential. The doctor sends sputum to the laboratory where a determination of the causative organism Is made. The doctor then administers the proper type of serum and the patient quickly recovers.'
