It is true that his weigH is, in a measure, an indication of his development. But his gain or loss can only be applied to his own rate of progress: it is in no way comparable to the weight of your neighbor's baby. If he doesn't gain according to standard weight charts. or as rapidly as the baby next dam it is no cause for alarm. Every in· fant has his own, individual rhythm in gaining weight. The impo>·t:mt thing about your baby's weig' f is that he gain steadily. As a general rule a baby will lose a little weight after he is born, but he should regain most of this within his first two weeks. By the time he is six months old a baby will generally havft doubled his birth weight, and ' at one year he will have triur1ph. antly tripled this · figure. As a rule, babies make an a·;-=rag( weekly gain of 4 to 8 ounces during the first six months, slowing down to from 4 to 6 ounces weekly during the second six months. Most physicians suggest weighing your baby once a week during the first year. To keep all factors as nearly equal as poss1ble, it is well to select the same day of the week, and the same time of day, to do the weighing. To begm, balance the scaler with a blanket, undress your baby, and place him on the scales. Just before his bath is an excellent time to do this. If your baby's weight remains the same for a week, or if he makes an occasional loss rather than a gain, it is no cause for alarm. But if this condition lingers over a longer period of time it would be wise to consult your doctor. A proper choice of diet is an important factor in encouraging a normal gain in weight. Be sure to follow your doctor's suggestions in every det:1il. See that your baby has, in addition to milk, all the supplementary foods his doctor advises, and at the proper stages in his development, too. The~e will be orange juice, cod or other fish liver oils, a pre-cooked cereal food, and the nutritionally important str<1ined and junior foods now on th.:- market.
