Saturday evening of last week a dinner party was held at the home of Mr & Mrs Scott R Brown honoring the East Midvale Sen· ior Scout basketball team which won the district championship. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the tro· phy which the team won. The members of the team and others present were Lynn Nilsson, Dick Jewkes, Don Wilson, Keith Sor· enson, Howard Millerberg, Calvin Thornton, Brad Gardner, Al· lan Dahl, Don Swenson, Clinton Cutler, Wayne Nilsson, Kenneth Burningham, Mr & Mrs Bob Marler, Beth Soffe, Bill Nilsson and Mr & Mrs Brown. Sunday dinner guests of Mr & Mrs T Donald Creer were Mr & Mrs Joe Gordon of Los Angeles, Calif. · Mrs Bryan Bird entertained her bridge club Saturday at a one o'clock luncheon at her home on South State. Covers were laid for 12 guests, the special guests being Mrs B A Rasmussen, Mrs Allison Bills, Mrs Leo Anderson, of Midvale, and Mrs William Willey of Salt Lake City. Despain, who died May 14, at his 'home in Granite, we~ held at the Deseret Mortuary in Salt Lake city, Friday afternoon, Bishop Emerson Hand conducting. Music was under the direction of the mortuary staff. S. Peter Peterson was the guest speaker. Prayers were offered by R. S. Hawkins and Thomas Blair. and remark; were by Bishop Hand. Gem·ge F. Despain was born in Granite 76 years ago and lived there all his life. He was a rock quarry worker by trade and helped in the construction of the Salt Lake LDS temple. He served for a number of years as bi..,.hop of the Granite ward. His wife. Pru- dence Butler Despain, preceeded him in death in 1942. His survivors include 5 sons, 3 daughters and l2 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Liberty ward chapel in Salt Lake City for AndreW Thomson, 61, native of Grnnite, who died May l4, following a long illness. In h:is early life he transported mail to Alta and was a charter member of the • I ' Mineralogy Society of Utah. He is survived by his widow, Mrs Edna Thomson, 1 brother and 3 sisters, including Mrs Ruth T. Ebert of Granite. Mrs George Muir, while walkIng about the yard, stepped on :l small stick which pierced a vein in her leg, causing a rapid loss of blood. George H. Poulson, her neighbor, rendered first aid · and then took her to the office of Dr T. E. Clark in Sandy, who dressed the wound. She is getting along as well as can be expected. Prior to their departure for San Diego, Pfc and Mrs Emer M. Gallagher, recent newlyweds, were honored at a shower, given Monday evening at the home of the brides mother, Mrs Emma Becla:tead. Lively contest games were featured and prizes were :awarded, after which a tray luncheon was served. Mr & Mrs Gallagher were the recipients of many beautiful gifts. Hostesses were, the brides mother, Mrs 'Beckstead, and her sister~ , Mrs Beth Bowen of Riverton, Mrs Reva Thompson of Tooele, and Mrs Rarnl'\ra Mangrum of Salt Lake City. 30 guests were in attendance. Among the special occasions given in their honor was dinner at Wanship Tl}ursday night, Sunday morning bfeakfast -at the A. E. Fisher home in Salt Lake City, and Monday evening. All three groups and their leaders had an achievement of 100 per cent attendance during the MIA year. There was a total of 72 girls and their leaders in the three groups, the Builders, Gatherers and Guardians. The party was held in the grove and there were 60 present. t 'he closing party for the MIA was in the fonn of a spring froHe on Tuesday• evening, and was a very successful affair. It was held in the school auditorium, which was very beautifully decorated in pastel shades of paper and spring flowers. The Gleaners had char.ge of the refreshments which were served to several hundred in attendance on Tuesday evening. Mrs LaMar Burkinshaw and children were guests of Mr & Mrs Melvin Wells of Salt Lake City on Sunday. Immediately following the high school graduation, Mr & Mrs LaMar Burkinshaw entertained for Mrs Albert Burkinshaw and daughter Wanda of Sandy, Mr & Mrs Melvin Wells of Salt Lake, and their own family. Refreshments were s~rved. The gathering was to honor Miss Wanda Burkinshaw, a graduate. Mrs Laura E. Finlayson celebrated her 95th birthday anniversary on Sunday May 12, aP the home of her daughter and family, Mr & Mrs Henry W. Cooley. On Wednesday the 15th, she accompanied her daughter Nora Finlayson to Los Angeles by plane, where she wiU stay with another daughter, Mrs J. L. Hibbard, and husband. Word has been received by the family that she enjoyed the trip. Mr & Mrs Ralph Butler announce the birth of a daughter at on Saturday, May 11. This is the . first grandchild of Mr & Mrs Vard Asay where the young couple are living at present. Mrs Hyrum Glover has been on the sick list during the past week. Mrs Alta Wilson of Salt Lake and Mr & Mrs Frank Pierson of Midvale, were dinner guests of Mr & Mrs Earl P. Bateman on Sunday. Mrs William H . Steadman visited her sister, Mrs Mary Milne of Union and they both spent a few hours visiting with Mrs Leonard Steadman of Holladay on Sunday afternoon. Mike Makris who h~s been in a Salt Lake hospital for a few months has returned home. Mr & Mrs Samuel Tuttle have returned home from their honey~ moon trip to California and Nevada, on Thursday evening.
