Show THESE KIDS Of OURS! By P. M. ~flCKELSEN Director, Pupil Personnel J arctan School District SCHOOL IS OUT Thr oughvul. tue J ordan dis trict thjs week is hear d the glad cry of "School is Out." After 35 weeks of preparing and r eciting lessons, of getting up and washing necks and ears, of sitting at a desk from 9 unti l 3:30 every day, Johnnie is now "liberated" from routine, and for the first few days of vacation he is at peace with the world. Theh a form of of boredom sets in and by Sep ~ tember he is anxious for school to start. as he was for it to stop in May. From those who are completing theil: fir::;t years schooling to the blase hlgb school graduates, the big question of the p::.st few weeks has been, "Will I pass?" Those who were promoted now feel a thrill of achievement whicn comes through having attained an objective, coupled with a .fine re~ solve, usually unexpressed, to do better next year. Most of these youngsters are p.etermined to" keep up with their grades from the first next y ear and thus avoid the anxieties of the past few weeks. Too bad that enthusiasm won't last. Then there are those youngsters, fortunately few in numbers, who failed to make the grade. In these days no social stigma is attached to the retained pupil. Poor attendance, retarded development or other factors might make it advisable for a student to repeat a grade. Quite often a youngster who is retained in one of the lower grades becomes an excellent student later on, while if he had been promoted before he was ready, he might have been a misfit during the rest of his school career. Parents and pupils should always remeber that in in giving teacher has in mind only the welfare of the child, and he is retained only when it seems to be to his interest -to do so. Much more harm has been done to students by advancing them before they were ready than by holding them ba ck. Let us now begin to build up our k ids io1· next winter. Now is the time to make sure of their health. A physical checkup is highly recommended and the dentist should be given a chance to put teeth in good condition. Plenty of play out in the open is the birthright of every boy and girl and vacation time should be a t;m,. to store up "gobs" of sun~ shin e for the long winter ahead. Nor shou ld work be neglected. Any youngster is going to be much better off if he is held to regular tasks. Older boys and g1r1S will fmd a iew weeks' work on a nearby farm a fine experience and an aid to keeping fit. But above all, parents should see to it that vacation time is happy time for these kids of ours • MALSTROM-TUTTLE RITES HE LD ON MAY 8 One of the outstanding even ts of the week was the marriage of Miss Arlene Malstrom, daughter of Mr & Mrs Elmer Malstrom., to Samuel E Tuttle, son of Mrs Elzinia Buckley, in the Salt Lake temple, May 8.
