Re p orter Sandy Jr. High Graduates 73 The closing exercises for ninth grade graduates of the Sandy junior high school were held Thursday evening, May 16, under direction of Principal J. Reed Sanderson, when 74 studenta were graduated. • '!'he program included march of graduates; opening chorus, "I Am the Builder," by graduates; Invocation., La Voy Whitmore; Theme, "l Dare You.~~ was given by graduates Bonni~ Olson, James OsUer, Marilyn Grundvig, Jay Jensen, Joan Cowley and James Sanderson. Awards for perfect attendance during the ninth grade year, were awarded Pearl Morrow, Luana Jaynes and Tom Onlshi. Pin awards for winning in speech contest held for choosing graduation speakers: Bonnie Olson, James Ostler, Marilyn Gnmdvig, Jay Jensen, Joan Cowley, James Sanderson. A feature of the program was also the investiture ceremony of the student body officers, when the incoming officers were given the key of the school affairs for next y~ar including, Mont Bishop, head-boy; lla Wright, head-girl; and Doris Pierce, school scribe. Little Miss Sandra Zaiser is spending two weeks with Mr & Mrs G I.eonard Larson. Mr & Mrs Thomas W Stowe and family and Mr & Mrs Albert Boulter and daughter of Sandy, Mr & Mrs Brig Smith & children and Mr & Mrs Don Smith and children of Granger, visited with Mrs Esther Boulter Sunday. Grant Mervin Naylor, of the t navy, and David C Rasmussen, husband of the former Miss Yvonne Fowkes of Sandy, were recently discharged from the navy at the Shoemaker, Calif., separation center. Sandy Mourns Navy Pilot Killed in Crash \ ,, The sympathy of the community goes out to Mr & Mrs Muryel A. Stuart in the death of their son, Lt. <Jg) Riter Muryel Stuart in a mid-air collision near Xmore, Vtrg1ma, the afternoon of May 9. Riter was born Oct. 2, 1922 in Salt Lake, the son of Muryel A. and Marie Grow Stuart.· The family moved to Bingham making their home in Copperton. They later came to Sandy to make theiir hom~ where they have since. resided. .I Riter was a graduate of Jordan high and attended the University of Utah for one year before enlisting in the Navy air corps as a pilot in Sept. 1942. Following training, he was graduated and received his commission in March 1944 at Corpus Christi, Texas. He left for overseas in Feb. 1945 and was a pilot of a night fighter. He saw active service at Leyte, Okinawa) and the main island of Japan. He was piloting a plane over Japan on . V-J Pay. Lt Stuart re~enlisted for ser~ vice in the navy for one year, fol~ lowing his return from overseas. His brother, Pearld S 2/c, of the navy, was also stationed at the naval base at Norfolk, Va., at the time of his brothers death. Besides his parents, Riter is survived by his brother, Dearld, who is now home on leave, also a SI\lall brother Paul Kent, one sister, Rose Marie of Sandy, and his ~:!rand-parents, Mr & Mrs H. R. Grow of Salt Lake City. He was the grand-son of the late Archie Stuart of Sandy. ' Kindergarten Classes Slated During Summer Summer kindergartep. will be held in ten schools of the Jordan schoot district for a six week period from Monday, May 20, to Friday, June 28, inclusive, according to Arthur E. Peterson. Children who. attend kindergarten must be sh{ years of age by Oct. 31, 1946, and must present birth certificates upon entering the kindergarten, it has been announced. The board of education of the district will provide jill experienced kindergarten teacher and all necessary equipment, but the patrons must provide transportation for their children to attend kindergarten, it has been aryJ.Ounced. "It is a decided advantage to young children to have this kindergarten training before begining first grade work. Mrs Faustine Ballamis and Mrs Cecelia Larson we~e gener~l chairmen in charge, assisted by other members of the Auxiliary: The tables held an attractive arrangement of yellow tulips and bridal wreath, with tall white lighted tapers in chrys~ tal holders at either end. Appreciation for the honor given Gold Star Mothers was expressed by Mrs J. William Thompson. The affair was the first Gold Star Mothers function given by the Sandy ,Auxiliary. BISHOP HONORED ON BIRTHDAY Bishop Isaac L Sorenson of Sandy First ward was entertained at a surprise social Tuesday evening at Glacio park by members of the bishopric, presidencies and other organizations celebrating his birthday. A program was also presented. Bishop Sorenson was presented with two church books by the group, and the evening was concluded with a luncheon enjoyed by some 80 guests.
