Every good American cherishes the Four Freedoms contained in the now famous Atlantic Charter: Freedom of Worship, Freedom of Speech, Freedom from Want and Freedom from Fear. There is anotl1er freedom for which all humanity is fighting: Freedom from Disease. One of ilie most feared and most insidious diseases tl1at annually threatens this nation is infantile paralysis. It is high on the list of Public Enemies because its victims are chiefly children under 16. More than 75 per cent of all persons in this country stricken by polio are under 20 years of age. More than 13,000 men, women and children in the United States were victims of infantile paralysis in 1945, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis reports. Infantile paralysis-the great crippler-is no respecter of persons. It strikes rich and poor alike, white and black, Protestant, Cailiolic and Jew. The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis was founded in 1938 to "lead, direct and unify the fight against infantile paralysis" and is dedicated to the conquest of the disease. The National Foundation is supported by the annual March of Dimes, scheduled this year from January 14 to 31, inclusive. Through contributions to ilie March of Dimes, YOU can help bring tl1e Fifth Freedom closer. GADGET ERA AHEAD When and if the wheels of production in America get to rolling in a big way, we are promised a host of new gadgets and materials, the likes of which we have never seen before. But we've been hearing that promise now so often, and we have waited so long for its fulfillment that some of us may be thinking that the predicted products are more fiction than fact. Recently, however, a congressional subcommittee, making a study of our manufacturing processes developed during ilie war, issued a list of more than 800 new gadgets, materials, inventions and processes that were developed in 1944 alone. These nbW products, says the committee, will make American living conditions more comfortable and convenient and will add new beauty to the home and ilie office.
