PETERSON, Ccwrupondent Out~door sports, a concert, dancing and the awarding of merit badges were highlights that fea- tured the closing of the school work in Granite Tuesday afternoon. At 1 o'clock festivities began with an hour of out-door sports including a ball game. A program followed with the advanced pupils entertaining with .a symphonette concert. Interspersing numbers were presented by 1he primary grade children. Dancing followed with piano accom· ]laniment furnished by Mrs C R .Higgins. Cookies were served. Each of the pupils was presented with a safety badge for the obEeiVance of safety rules during the school year, and the school was given a 98 per cent efficiency vote which is under the direction of the county sheriff's office. Carl Ebert and Dale Springer, serving as junior sheriffs during the .school year were awarded certificates. A good attendance of parents witnessed the program. Local Sunday school officers and teachers supported by a full oeorps of the stake Sunday sebool board, representatives concerned in a faculty meeting Wednesday evening in the Granite ward --ebapel in preparation for confer· ence to be held Sunday, May 20. Following the meetjng the remainder of the evening was spent in .social activity. Varied games were enjoyed after which cake and cocoa were served to 30 people. Partners of o!ficers were special guests. Mr & Mrs James M Whitmore and children were among the guests to attend a family social complimenting the birthday of their brother-in-law, Chris K Steadman, at his home in West Jordan last Saturday evening. Patriarch & Mrs Joseph J Lar· kin of the Bear River stake are -visiting in Granite with their son, .Tames F Larkin and family. They expect to spend the summer here. Miss Rhea Orton of Los An· geles was a guest of Miss Clara Ebert last week-end. Mary Smith, Robert Whitmore and Richard Petersen of Granite are numbered among the Jordan high school graduating class who will receive their diplomas in their .final exercises tonight. Mr & Mrs Verne L Despain and family of Ogden were recent Granite visitors at the L E Despain home. Mr & Mrs James F Larkin and young son, Kent, and Patriarch & Mrs Joseph J Larkin, joined family members at dinner Sunday as guests of Mrs Mary Smith in Union. Mr & Mrs S Peter Petersen 1 ·-· had as their Saturday night visitors, Dr & Mrs James M Chris· tensen and babies of Colfax, Wash. Dr Christensen is locating with his family in Murray, in the near future and will be in the ser:vice of Salt Lake City. Mrs Lorraine Archibald and daughter, Gloria, spent Mother's day with relatives in Draper. Members of t;.he Granite ward choir participated in a jolly get· together in the chapel amusement room last Saturday evening. Principal James M Whitmore, Mrs Elizabeth Fowler, primary grade instructor, and Mr & Mrs George Muir, attended a banquet Thursday evening in the Jordan high school complimenting Dr C N Jensen, who is retiring as superintendent of the Jordan school district. All personnel of the school organization were guests. On Monday afternoon a fire re .. ported to have been caused by an over heated oil stove completely destroyed the top s.tory and con· tents of a poultry storage house belonging to Mr 8c Mrs Hvnry S Park in Granite. The room was used temporarily as a living quarters. The flames were kept from s.preading to the 2 wings of the poultry house where turkey poulls were confined by the neighbors until the county fire department arrived and extinguished the blazf'. UNION • MARION BIRD, Correspondent The 9th grade graduation class of the Union junior high school held its annual progressive party Monday evening at Storm Mountain in Big Cottonwood canyon. A musical was given Wednes· day evening by students of the Union junior high. The P·T A sponsored a farewell for Mrs Min· nie Wade, who is retiring after teaching school for 22 years. A book of religious poems and a corsage was presented to Mrs Wade. A corsage was also presented P-TA president, Mrs Mary Milne, in appreciate of the work she has done in the past year. Toasts were given by Principal Bennett Cash who represented the teachers, Mrs Edna Proctor, whv represented the parents, and Lt RonaJd Beckstrom, who represented former students. Light refreshments were served after the meet· ing. Everett Sanders, commissioner of spo1·ts in Los Angeles, was a guest through the week of Mr & Mrs Harold Madson. A dance was given Wednesday evening honoring LaMarr Os· borne and John Rudilich, who will leave soon for the armed forces. Mrs Elmo Lunnen entertained Thursday evening at a dinner honoring her husband's birthday anniversary. Covers were laid for 10 guests. A dance was enjoyed at American Fork during the evening. Mrs William Smith entertained her pinochle club Thursday with a hot luncheon. Cards were played and prizes were won by Mrs Sam Parker and Mrs Clem Fitzgerald. Mrs Mark Carroll and daughter of Alpine, spent the week-end at the home of Mr & Mrs Charles Carroll. Her husband is in the armed forces. Lt James Dawson of Birming· ham, Alabama, arrived at the Jaynes home Wednesday evening to spend the remajnder of his leave with Lt Homer Jaynes 3r~ who is stationed with him at Fort Riley, Kansas. A weiner roast was enjoyed at the Wilford Olson home on Thurs· day, May 10. Those present besides the Olson family were the families of Homer W and Chester Jaynes and Mrs Marcella Eck. Special guests were Lt Homer Jaynes Jr, and Lt James Dawson. A birthday dinner was given in honor of Chester Jaynes at his home Saturday, May 12. Those present besides the honored guest and his family were Mrs Marcella Eck and the families of Wilford Olson and Homer Jaynes. Lt Homer Jaynes Jr and Lt James Dawson spent the week-end in Logan where they were guests at the SAE fraternity house. Douglas Kemp. 5 2-c, of the navy left Wednesday evening by plane for Long Beach, Calif, where he is stationed. Mr & Mrs Jerry Hunter and Mrs Jean Thurber and daughters, Diana and Judy, of Midvale, visited Monday with Mrs Olof Olson. Mr & Mrs Henry Terkelson of Salt Lake City announce the birth of a son on V-E day, weighing 7 pounds 15% ounces. Both mother and son are during nicely. The Terkelsons are former residents of Crescent. Mrs John A Samuelson and Mrs Reed Nielsen attended a speech recital Tuesday evening in Salt Lake City. Dorothy Wilcox and Winona Christenson took part. Mrs Reed Nielsen attended a party Friday evening in Salt Lake City honoring Mrs Bruce Hughes, who was the former Maurice Harper of East Crescent. Dr & Mrs Theron C Olsen entertained at a mother's day dinner honoring their mother and members of their family and Mr & Mrs Earl Allgood of Salt Lake City. The Sunday school presented a very enjoyable program on Mother's Day. Mistresses of ceremonies were Mrs Harold Kemp and Mrs Leslie Fairbourn. A reminiscence o! past events was given in song and story. Flowers were given to Mrs Eleanor Jenson for oldest mother, Mrs Ciea Hickman, youngest mother and Mrs Anna Smith and Mrs Lydia Carroll !or having the largest family. It was under direction of the superintendency and Mrs Grace Johnson as supervisor in charge . Mrs John A Samuelson attended a party at the home of Mrs Glen Tolman, given in honor of her husband, who is home on a convelescant leave after serving overseas. Kay Schmidt, 3% year-old son of Mr & Mrs Herbert W Schmidt of Ogden, tripped and fell at the home of his grandparents, Mr & Mrs William .r Leak in West .Jor· dan on Friday, breaking his right; leg. He was rushed to Midvale for first aid and then taken to the Dee hospital in Ogden, where the fracture was reduced. Kay is dojng as well as can be expected. Mrs Lillian Gardner is .slowly improving at the home of Mr & Mrs ·William J Leak. Mrs Hyrum Stocking of Salt Lake City spent Thursday at the home of her son, visiting with Mrs Russell Stocking. Mrs Eliza Goodridge Scott of Redondo Beach, Calif, is visiting at the home of her brother and wife, Mr & Mrs Willis Goodridge. Ross Bateman is in the St Marks hospital recovering from a major operation. Mi.ss Merle Gardner, superintendent of the Heber City hospital, visited with Mrs Lillian Gardner and Mrs Stella Peterson and with her sister1 Mrs W E Egbert Saturday. Mr & Mrs C A Womack of Vivian Park, Provo canyon, were dinner guests of Mr & Mrs Albert Olson Monday evening. Mr & Mrs Willard Richardson were dinner guests of their daughter, Mrs Jack Douglas in Salt Lake City on Mother's Day, afterwards they attended a theater. Carlos Jensen of the navy is home visiting his parents, Mr & Mrs George M Jensen and other relatives and friends. Glen W Lehmitz. son of Mr & Mrs William Lehmitz, West .Jo:rdan, has arrived home on a furlough from the China-Burma-!Pu..a theater of operations, whe.ce he served 35 months with anti-aircraft artillery. The guest speaker will be Fred Curtis of the Scout council, who has charge of the senior Scouts for the entire church.
