Colorful fall flowers were used in the decorations. Mr & M r s J erry Murray are former residents of Sandy. It will b e rem embered by the older residen ts of Sandy that Mr M u rray oper ated a butcher sh op her e until 1905. M r Murray was born Dec 7. 1863, at Spanish Fork. Mrs Murray was born Nov 19, 1865, in 'Sweden. The couple were married Nov 8, 1884 at Vernon , the m arriage ceremony being perfonned by John C S harp. They are the par en ts of 9 children, 28 gra n dchildren and 21 great-gran dchildr en. One son, Ralph Murray is in the army, stationed some where in the Atlantic theater of war. The couple also have 7 grandsons in the armed forces. Sqt Landures Wins Distinguished Unit Badqe S gt T homas C L andu res, son of Mr & Mrs Gus Landures of Sandy, is a m ember of a h eavy bombardment group, which h as been cited f or a successful operation against t he rail yards of B u ch arest, Roman ia. He is now entitled to wear the distinguished unit badge. T he citation was issued after the group destroyed more than 40 Nazi planes while hitting their target. More than 90 planes attacked the unescorted bombers. CLUB ENTERTAINED Mr & Mrs Westel Cochran entertained their club at their home on East Seventh South street, Fri· day evening. T he game o:f 500 was enjoyed and luncheon served. Those present included Mr & Mrs G eorge Gadd and Mr & Mrs Laure n ce Coleman of Copperton and Mr & M rs L avell Timot hy, Mr & Mrs Lela n d Timothy and Mr & M rs G eorge Alpanalp of Bin gham. P rizes were awarded Mr & Mrs Lavell Tim othy and Mr & Mrs Alpanalp. The house priz.es was awarded Mr & Mrs Coleman. BOOK WEEK OBSERVED I n k eeping with National Childr en 's Book Week, a talk on childre n 's books was given by Mrs Zelma S T hompson, Sandy librarian at Sandy First ward M I A m eeting Tuesday evening. A specjal vocal number was sung by Doreen Stapley, Betty Jo Pierson and Ramona Hardcastle, accompanied on the piano by Miss Jolene Pierson. M r & Mrs Paul C Boyce entertained Mr & Mrs Ray P Greenwood and family at a dinner Thursday evening of last week at the Greenwood home. .. . ·-·· . ·-·-·-·-·-·-· Pioneer's History Told al Meeting The life history of Dr Milton Burnhasel, Utah pioneer of 1848, was read by Mrs Bernice Tellefsen Clayton, a close friend of the family, at the meeting of the Sandburr Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, held Thursday evening at the home of Mrs Florence Webb. An original letter written to Dr Burnhasel by Joseph Smith Jr, was also read by Mrs Clayton. The lesson on the early Utah undertakers and sextons was given by Mrs Elfleda L Jensen. Special guests at the meeting included Mrs Agnes R Brunson, captain of the Glover Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers of Midvale and Mrs Vema P Bishop, Mrs Lillian B Downs and Mrs Florence L Sjoblom, all officers of the Glover Camp. Following the meeting, refreshments were served to 18. Hostesses were Mrs Bernice T Clayton, Mrs Rosina Madsen and Mrs Florence Webb. The next meeting of the camp will be a Christmas social to be held at the home of Mrs J ean Whetman. Each one is requested to bring a 50 cent gift. Breaks Same Arm For Third Time Ray Haun, son of Mr & Mrs Joseph Haun of Sandy, is slowly recovering from a broken arm, su ffered m ore than 2 weeks ago when he fell near his home. Ray has had the misfortune of breaking the same ann 3 times. He has been confined to his bed since the accident. Ray was on his way to a party when he m et with t he misfortune, so his hopes of a pleasant time were suddenly turned to suffering and pain. PERSONAL MENTION Pvt Rulon Denney of the medical corps of the army, stationed at the Dibble general hospital at Menlo Park, Calif, spent last week with his parents, Mr & Mrs Lester Denney, enroute to California, af~ ter escorting several patients from the hospital to their homes and other hospitals in various parts of the United States. ing a 4 week's stay with his parents, Mr & Mrs Ray P Greenwood. During his visit here, Lt Greenwood visited with Mr & Mrs Joseph Daines of Logan and it was necessary for him to give them the first news of the death of their son, Lt Richard Daines, a P-47 pilot of the army, who lost his Iife in action in the European theater of war. ENGAGEMENT TOLD AT ANNOUNCEMENT TEA Mr & Mrs Paul ·c Boyce ot South State street announce the engagement of their daughter, Pauline, to First Lt Ray Parry Greenwood, Jr, son of Mr & Mrs Ray P Greenwood of Sandy. The announcement was made at an announcement tea given by Mr & Mrs Boyce at their home Nov 5, for members of the Boyce and Greenwood families and relatives. The rooms were beautifully decorated with roses and chrysanthemums. The serving table was cover ed with a lace cloth with a crystal bowl of talisman roses as the attractive centerpiece, with yellow candles in crystal holders placed at either end. The pourers during the afternoon included the Misses Luana Boyce, Alice Boyce, Ruth Boyce and Kay Alplanalp, who were frocked in tonnal gowns of pastel shade. Miss Paulene Boyce wore an attractive model of black with orchid corsage. Miss Boyce, a graduate of Jordan high school, where she was student body vicepresident, is now a scholarship student at the Utah State Agricultural college at Logan, where she is majoring in music and speech, anc} has been chosen as president of the Women's Residence hall, and is also affiliated with the Lambda Delta Sigma. Lt Greenwood, a graduate of the Jordan high school and a former student of the Utah State Agricultural college, has received much recognition for outstanding achievements in the European theater of war, from which he returned recently. PERSONAL MENTION Robert Denney, S l'c, Santa Rosa, Calif. was recently transferred to Memphis, Tenn, where he is attending aviation machin· ists school. Seaman Denney is the son of Mr & Mrs Lester Denney of Sandy. Pfc Ralph Beckstead of the Field Artillery has been promoted to his present rank at Little Rock, Arkansas, according to word received by his mother, Mrs Nina Beckstead. Homer Stub, S 1 ;c, stationed at the naval base at Clearfield, Utah, and his mother, Mrs Chester Stub of Parowan, Utah, were week-end guests of Mr & Mrs Jack LeFevre and family. Thomas A Dewey, Ogden air service command's civilian traJn~ ing branch administrator, formerly ot Sandy, has been called to Washington to assist in evaluating the war department's civilian training program. He expects to be gone 30 days. Paul C Boyce, superintendent of Mt Jordan stake Sunday school, and Mrs Elizabeth Wellington, member of the stake Sunday school board, were v-isitors at Sandy First ward Sunday school, last Sunday. Mrs William Peterson and children, Sharon and Jack, of Copperton, and Mrs Mary Allen and son, Gary, o:f Sandy, were Monday dinner guests of Mrs Maxine B Anderson. Mr & Mrs Adolph Christensen were guests last week of their daughter and son-in~law, Bishop & Mrs Fenton Draper and family at their home in Moroni. Mr Nielsen has had over 41 years teaching experience with 38 years administrative experience. He was principal of the Spanish Fork school for 9 years, and was principal of Bingham schools and high school for many years. He was principal of the Jordan high school for 20 years. Mr Nielsen was graduated from the Normal department of the University of Utah and taught several years in the grade schools before he fulfilled a mission to Germany for 3 years. He was later graduated from the Univers 7 ity of Utah with a bachelor of science degree and holds a life diploma for teaching, and an administrative credential. and Miss Richards, had a political debate. The issues taken up were Thanksgiving icy. The 4 Republican speakers were Calvin Elkington, Cheryl Townsend, Charlotte Ann Clark. and Melva Smith. The Democratic speakers were Eula Homan, Kay Abplanalp, Kenneth Peterson and Myra Bradley. After the debate, and election was held, and later in the day all classes voted on the election. The result was the same as the final election in the stat~ with Roosevelt, Truman, Thomas, getting substantial leads, and ].faw leading Lee by only 2 or 3 votes~ Twice every year, at Valentine's and Thanksgiving, we have a big school dance, with an orchestra, elaborate decorations, and refreshments. Plans are well under way for our dance this year. The date is set for Nov 20, the Monday evening before Thanksgiving. This year an Indian theme is being used. In the art room its possible to see wigwams, Indian war paint, feathers, etc. These decorations will probably be the most inter~ting we've had. Mrs Lester has charge of them. The floor show will be under the direction of Miss Gilbert. She is preparing an Indian dance, a smoke dance, and a scarf dance. These will be in costume. Only Sandy Junior high students, and their partners who may be from other schools, will be allowed to come. We are looking forward to this dance. -Jeanine Dowding Elections On Nov 7, election day, the 9th grade English and civics classes, under the direction of Mr Miller Mrs Lena Beckstead and little daughter spent the past week at the home of her sister, Mrs Flora Starn, in Salt Lake City. Mr & Mrs J L Allsop and Mr & Mrs Roy Dobson of Tooele and Mrs J C Williams of Salt Lake City were Saturday dinner guests of Mr & Mrs Myrle Allsop. On Wednesday, Nov 15, the Sandy school is sponsoring the first P-TA meeting of the season. The Elementary school has charge of the program, which will show parents how the activity program works, and give scenes showing the type of activities their children are doing. The children in the school will participate. We hope that there will be a fine crowd. because parents and teachers should know each other and understand each other's problems. Besides the honored guests, covers were laid for Mr & Mrs Paul C Boyce and family and Mr & Mrs Ray P Greenwood and family. SANDY SCHOOL NEWS Mrs Beth S Phillips arrived Saturday to spend severa weeks with her parents, Mr & Mrs John H Shaw in East Sandy. Mrs Phillips has been attending school at the University of Washington at Seattle. Her husband is in the army, stationed some where in England. Miss Melba Otteson spent the week-end with her parents, Mr & Mrs Andrew Jones. She is a student at Brigham Young university at Provo. Frank D Borg, son of Mr & Mrs Fred Borg, left last week for service in the army. His wife and their 2 small sons are residing at their home at 64 South Third East street. Page Four '.
