If first coat is dry to touch in 6 .hours, wait 12 hours or more before applying next coat. 4. Use a primer-thin coat of paint-after paint remover. Thin with turpentine if wood is close grain; with linseed on if open grain. 5. Apply 2 or 3 coats. Two coats will last three to four times as long as one coat. 6. Use flat paint or enamel undercoat for undercoats, brushing it in, first with grain of wood, then across grain. Never apply enamel as first coat; it can't be recoated satisfactorily. 7. Finish with enamel, which washes and wears. "Flow" on with a full brush, without retouching. 8. Avoid smeared edges. A thin piece of copper weather stripping will protect floor edges and window panes. Remove knobs and hinges, U possible. A rag and turpentine will remove mistakes, if used quickly. 9. Suspend brush by a string in jar of linseed oil or turpentine when you finish for the day; or, clean brush, wrap in paper and lay flat, ready for next job.
