Show THE UTE SENTINEL, MIDVALE, UTAH Economist Gives Outlook Report On Farm Prices \\'ith the market demand for alfalfa hay and wheat expected to be n.aller this year than in 1937, and Wlth Utah dairy products prices expected to suffer a drop , farmers f'hould give careful consideration to problems of farm management in arranging cr op plantings, the pring is!;Ue of the 1938 Utah farm cutlook report, just prepared by 0. J. Wheatley, extension economist at the Utah State Aglicultural college, urges. "Because of a mild winter in Utah last year, and because of a aecrease in the number of hay-con.suming livestock in the state, there wi 1 probably be a substantial carnrover of hay which will no doubt ,-ellult in lower hay prices during '938," Dr. Wheatley's report points out. For many Utah farmers, the $:Oming year would be a good time in which to plow up old alfalfa fields and possibly retain an extra ~tack of hay, it is suggested. A carxy-over of almost 200 million bushels of wheat from last years' crop will probably result in ~ down-trend in grain prices. ,Farmers who are producing wheat on high-priced irrigated land are advised to shift their acreage to 1 1 .some more profitable crop. Reasonable potato acreages, even at moderate prices, fit well into a wise farm management echeme, and sugar beets, aided by a governmental bonus, will prob~bly be profitable this year. Farmers 1U'e reminded, however, that it .fs not generally profitable to grow lleets on lands where the acre yield .US less .Ulan about 12 tons. Meat prices can be expected to fluctuate and possibly rise during tbe next year, and poultrymen will .,00 doubt J:~eive good returns from eggs and po)J.ltry products, it was re.Ported. Wool, too, wi11 probably be in demand but butterfat price reduction are to be expected. AAA Sets Wage Beet Laborers Rates For Utah Farmers must pay their crop laborers at least $8 an acre fOr the first beet thinning this year if they wish to comply for ma,Pmum payments under the new sugar act, a telegram received last week at the state AAA headquarters in Lo· .ran points out. Utah district rates, i s s u e d through Director William Peterson of the Utah State Agricultural college extension service, specify a PJinimum pay of $2.50 an acre for .tlrst hoeing, $1.50 an acre for second weeding and hoeing, 90 cents a ton for pulling and topping where the acre-yield is more than 12 tons, and 80 cents a ton for betteryielding fields. Where loading is done by the sam~ l~porer doing the topping, an additional 10 cent payment a ton will be require<!. -~ ;This information shall n~t be construed, however, to mean that a producer may qualify for payment who has not paid in full the amount agreed upon by the pro)lucer and laborer, the telegram ~arned. . D~termination of the "fair and reasonable" rate of pay for beet labor came as a result of hearings -and investigations held earlier this year in the various beet-growing areas of the country. For the setting up of wage scales, the country's beet areas were divided into seven districts, with seven different wage scales, it was announced.
