If the shortened program, however, becomes a policy of the dis~ trict and continues so that a student goes through most of high school work on a shortened program, the credits are discounted as explained. Reports from the schools of your district have shown for two years that your school year has been shortened but no reduction has yet been made, on the understanding that your shortened, program was a temporary arrangement and would not continue. It is the hope of the university that the board will see its way clear to return again to the standard school year. "We realize that your board ha.s a serious problem to meet. The univer~ sity has a problem also in avaluatlng the credits from the various schools. It is our experience that students who go through their entire four years on a shortened program are not so well prepared for the university as those who have the advantage of a standard school year. Moreover, some districts manage to carry the additional lead necessary to keep their schools going for the full year and it seems only just that their graduates should have an advantage over those from schools running on a shortened program. "Yours very truly, "E. J. NORTON, "Recorder, University of Utah." "If we are forced to close on March 18, we shall have run only 28 weeks, and shall be short 2-9 of the year's requirements. Do you want your students to be handicapped to such an extent ? The opponents of the bond issue are certainly putting the university in an unfavorable light when they intimate that it is entirely agreeable to the university to shorten the year when the purpose of the above letter is clearly to lengthen the school year in Millard county. Why not be fair?" Mrs. Ellen Gardner celebl"ated her anniversary Wednesday of GIVEN that the Board of Education l.ast weelt at the home of her son, R. of Jordan School District of Salt Lake :t.
