He was recently persuaded by Lady Wolseley, with whom he was reconciled after a long estrangement. to return to England and assume bJs title. USE RATS IN STUDY OF DECAY OF TEETH Find Soundness of Dentition Depends on Diet. ~aljimore.- Two Johns Hopkins bniverslty scientists have made pubUc discoveries that go far toward explaining the ways ln which diet causes, c>r prevents, decay of teeth. Two fer- tilizers, phosphon1s and calcium, regtil d' by vitamin D are the tooth aa ers. The experiments showing how to work the eomblnntton of the three snb:stances were explained in Science, offidal organ of the American Association tor the Advancement of Science, by Dr. E. V. McCollum and Henry Klein. Their work was aided by grants from the American Dental assocln.tion. The tests were made on rabs. ln the laboratories their caretakers grew tooth cavities in the rodents almost at will, or prevented them almost entirely. All this was done simply by giving the rats the right proportions of phosphorus and calcium. This correct ratio was about four parts of phosphorus to ,.three of calcium. Proportions of three to two did not work. Not only tl1e ratio was important but the amo1,1nt also. There was a minimum of the fertilizers belo"· wllich they tailed of efl'ectlveness. When the rats were fed too little and In wrong proportions, the report states that 80 per cent of them developed tavttles In 140 days. With properly balanced diet this decay wns cut to fi per cent. The investigators further ascertained that the portion or the phosphorus tn the blood is of vital impor· tance, and that this is related to vitamin D. Calcium and phosphorus are two of the principal fertilizers. They reach • man daiJy in many difrerent kinds of food, but their proportions vary greatly. Vitamin D comes both from eating food and from sunshine or ultra-violet light on the skin. ~ v •• ers prepares to go to the gai!O\'!S in March in th&t state penltent1a1·y at Mo'Ulldsville, W. Va., fedet·a1 authorities are making a nntlon-wlde in\o·estigation of matrlmontal agencies and love clubs such as the~ one through which Powers met two women he mur· dered. There are more than 300 such agencies in the United States, it ls asserted. n11d they ha,'e more than a million "members," Including both men and women. Tbe government charges that men and women are not only being swin~ died by these organizations but also that through them they are also being placed at the mercy of conflUence men, blackmailers, and even ktllers. Many Others Like Powers. Powers, who was condemned to die for killing a Chicago woman after he had made love to her and obtained her money after meeting her through a Detroit matrimonial agency, ts not the first to take life under such circumstances. Stlll remembered is the case of Desire Landru, called "Biuebeard," the Frenchman who dismembered the bodies of 11 women to whom he had made love before robbing and then killing them. Landru lured his vtetims through "love wanted" notices, as also did Bela KJss, a Hungarian. Kiss became' engaged to more than 125 women through various matrlmo~ nlal agencies and killed 30 of them. Years ago Johann Hoch, of Ohiengo, became acquainted with 12 women whom he married, robbed, and then killed. Aaencies Are Thriving.
