Following the granting of franchises to the Wasatch Gas company to run pipe lines into and through the cities of Lehi, American Fork and Pleasant Grove, plans are under way for the immediate comencement of work on the new construction. Jules D. Roberts, vice president of the Utah Gas and Coke company, the Wasatch Gas ccmpany and the Ogden Gas company has stated that the concern will lose no time in extending their gas mains from Midvale to Pleasant Grove. The fuel companv completed negotiations with the Utah Valley Gas and Coke company for acquisition of their properties Wednesday evening, and the Wasatch Gas company will operate also in Provo Springville and Spanish Fc"'c Mr. Roberts stated that wherever poFsible local labor would be Uf'ed on the proposed construction. Several hundred men are expected to be employed on the project and a total of a half million dollars is budgeted for expenditure during 1931. Gives Business Views In commenting on business conditions and the feeling of instability among certain business men aT\d the general public, Mr. Roberts said: "In all the discussions of our present business depression, the fact remains that this country is no poorer than in 1929. Our vast natural resources remain the same. Our people remain the same. Our inventive genius has not changed. .Our outlook on life has not changed. Inflation has been taken out of securities to a large extent, and while it is only natural to be cautious in a time like this, it seems to me that conditions have never been more favorable for new construction and expansion. Raw materials of all kinds are at the lowest prices that this country has seen for years. There is rapidly developing an ample labor market and there exists a willingness to work on the part of all. "Our faith in this great state of Utah is such that we will spend approximately half a million dollars in new construction in Utah this year. We will extend immediately our present natural gas system from Midvale to Pleasant Grove, bringing natural "{as to the people of Lehi, American Fork and Pleasant Grove. We will employ several hundred workmen on this project alone during the construction period. Local men will be used wherever possible. Seek Other Property. "Negotiations for the acquisition of the Utah Valley Gas and Coke company's distribution systems in Provo, Springville and Spanish Fork have been completed, and the Wasatch Gas company will enter into a contract with the Columbia Steel company at Ironton, whereby the Columbia Steel company will supply the Wasatch Gas company with coke oven gas at a price which will allow its distribution at a rate comparable wi~h natural gas. It is expected that extensive work will be carried on In rehabilitating and expanding tbe present systems in these towns. · "Nationally a sound readjustment period is being completed, the worst is over and the year 1931 holds a promise of slow but steady improvement. Our Utah market& are gradually improving and the buying power of the people of Utah will increase with tbe improvement in business. The individuals or firms tha~ prosper will be the ones who employ the most modern and aggressive methods and the most intelligently directed marketing efforts. The year 1931 will reward fighters."
