Show .. . I .. '. ·. -~ MIDVALE JOURNAL Friday, November 16, 19 8 Real Saving On th-e eve of our winter live stock exhibitions where our flock and herd masters gather to exhibit their skill and science in breeding and preparation, we will see the result of many generations of eft'ort in producing the last word in conformation and type. These conventions of breeders and breeds present a study well worth while. In fact, there's so much to learn about the flocks and herds assembled at the major stock show that the brief show period is hardly sufficient time to satisfy the real student. Animal husbandry is recorded In early history as a noble art and a distinguished vocation. Cicero, in addition to being a great orator, also aspired to be a husbandman. Naturally the men who have attained the highest honors in their line feel (and justly too) some degree of pride and like to have the public show an interest in their achievement. We will find that these major shows sires and dams with a record of progeneration almost back to the Ark, each animal having been carefully recorded and its pedigree preserved. The opportunity of exchange, common ly referred to as buying and selling, at the big shows is the means of During the Revolution, the people obserflell an annual Thanlugiving Do>; by p~ocla mation of the Continental Congress. After peace, observance of the day was dosconttnued until1789, wl,en Washington, as President, appointed Thursday, Novem, ber 26, 1719, a day for genPrd thanksgiving thro~ghout the Union. These major shows represent the grand ensemble of live 11tock shown at the State and County Fairs. The winter shows are essentially live stock shows so that all interest centers in live stock. We all like to see good cattle, sheep and swine but with many it is a passing event and lots of people hesitate to comment or ask questions of the breeders and herdsmen which is a mistaken viewpoint so let's go to these shows and take an active interest in the work of the people whose own lives and their ancestors' have been devoted .to the improvemenet of our meat food supply and to our dairy herds which means so much to all of us. We are a meat eating nation and should take an active interest in know ing more about the source of supply of a thing so important to th people as a whole. There are certain essentials in breeds that the breeders strive to reach like constitution, type Keeping Pace With The Times Faster and faster are changes coming in this rapidly changing world. Their influence is felt everywhere-es-pecially in the fields of banking, investment, and finance. It is our constant aim to keep abreast of the changing times-to be able to advise our friends in business, whether farming or merchandising, and assist them in solving the perplexing problems of finance and investment that come with a complex and rapidly changing age. MIDVALE STATE BANK - MIDVALE - - - and progeny. Beef production calls for the greatest amount of the best quality of beef produced in the shortest time. That means a good constitution and the right conformation and blood lines as a starting point, and these essentials can only be had by proper breeding so that the so-called pure bred and even the well bred, while costing more in the first place, is cheaper in the long run, because it Is the quickest way to choice beef maturity and the quality commands the best price for the reason that f't more nearly meets the demands of the consumer for a satisfying and palatable diet with the least amount of waste. That we cannot have successful agriculture without live stock has been recognized from the very beginning That meat of agricultural eft'ort. food Is essential to mankind was recognized by the two by two parade into the Ark, as a heritage of civilization. How many of us really appreciate "how wholly on the Ark our victuals do depend." We need more of a live stock sentiment tf for no other reason· than as an encouragement to agriculture because we depend upon the agriculturists for the things we eat and most of the things we wear and finally there Is no substitute for a good piece of steak, mutton chops or ham and bacon. Cattle breeders who exhibit at the Third Annual Christmas Live Stock Week December 2nd to 8th, which will be held at the Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, will compete for handsome silver trophies awarded by three of the leading Los Angeles hotels according to an announcement made today by J. A. McNaughton, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Show. The Miltmore Hotel is oft'ering a handsome silver service to be awarded to the breeder showing the best group of five Herfords of his own breeding. The Alexandria Hotel is offering a similar costly prize for the best group of Shorthorns; and the Ambassador Hotel is oft'ering a beautiful silver service for the best group of Aberdeen-Angus cattle. The award must be won three years out of five in order to obtain permanent possession. Mr. McNaughton pointed to this cooperation on the part of the leadIng Los Angeles Hotels as concrete A great liner brings sixty passengers across the Atlantic. Transportation by air is rapidly becomina- a reality. • Two country women were ..e:t"guing on the matter of thrift. "D'ye see that purse?" demanded one with a triumphant air. "It's the one I bought when I was marled 20 years ago, and it's as good as new yet." "That's nothing!" sneered her friend. "You know my husband, John?" "Of course I do. What about him?" "Well, he's my first husband, and you've had three. Don't you preaeb thrift to me!" UTAH AGGIES MEET MONTANA BOBCATS Utah Aggies meet the Montana State Bobcats in one of the feature grid tilts of the Rocky Mountain Conference on Saturday, November 17 in the new Utah Aggie Stadium. Both teams have scored impressive victories in previous games and appear to be equal favorites to win the game. A stirring battle should result. Coach Dick Romney's Aggies still have an outside chance to win the conference title if they are able to bowl over the Bobcats this week and then come through with a win over Utah University · on Thanksgiving Day. The Aggies have lost only one conference game this season being nosed out 7-6 by Colorado Aggies, the most powerful team on the other side of the mountains. The cricial Colorado games begin next week, and 1 if both Colorado Aggies and Colorado College g et defeated and Utah Aggies beat Montana and Utah the pennant will fly in Logan. At least one of the Colorado teams will be defeated as they play each other in the closing game of the year. The Aggies expect to throw their Montana whole strength against State. Captain Theron Smart, brilliant Aggie halfback, has been out of a suit for two weeks, but will be in condition for the Colorado Aggies. All of the other men will have recovered from injuries and Romney's lineup against the Bozeman team will probably be Gardner at center, Bergeson and Vanderhoof, guards; Day and Clark, tackles; Jensen and Dahle, ends; Call, quarterback; Smart and Worthington, halfbacks; and Gillespie, fullback. The Montana team has defeated Idaho University this year and held Nebraska, Big Six champions, to a low score. They also downed the B. Y. U. by a two touchdown margin evidence of the interest attached to the Show by Los Angeles institutions. It is doubtful if there were ever more valuable trophies announced by hotels at any show in the country and there is thus added incentive for the breeders to stive to win with their herds. Five of the leading Herford herds on the Pacific Coast, representing a value of many thousands of dollars, are already entered. Largest Magnet is Heavier than a. Locomotive The world's largest magnet, a 120 ton monster that weighs more than many a locomotive, has recently been completed at the Bellevue laboratory of the French National Research Bureau. Resting on massive pillars, it will aid in important researches in light, electicity, and radio activity. Torrents of water cool its huge copper coil, which carries a terrific electric current of 3,000 ampers- enough to light, say, six thousand ordinary lamps. According to the designer, M. A. Cotton, it can maintain its powerful magnetic field, unabated, for hours, if necessary, during prolonged experiment. -Popular Science Monthly PATENTS Protect Your Idea! E. E. VROOMAN & CO. ..
