Birds with the same general characteri~tics are placed In one class. Classe» are then divided Into breeds. Each breed of poultry 19 distinguished from other breeds by differences In type. Breedl are separated into varieties. The dif· ferent varieties of the same breed are designated by differences In comb or color. All varieties of the same breed should have the same general type characteristics. There are four general cla~ses of chicl>ens that are common and other classe9 less common. The American class consists of birds that are of the general purpose type. They have yellow skin 11nd !~>gs, red ear lobes and legs free !rom feathers. The breeds that make up this class are: Plymouth Rock, Wyandotte, .TaYft, Dominique, Rhode Island Red, Rhode Island \Vhlte, Buckeye, Jersey Black Giants ancl Chanticleer. The Mediterranean class are small· er than the American class and are often known as the egg breeders. They are nervous In disposition, very active, compactly built, have white ear lobes and clean legs. The breeds that make up this class, are: Leghorn, Minorca, Spanish, Andalus!an an<l Ancona. Fowls that make up the Asiatic class are large and clumsy, have red ear lobes and feathers on their legR. Th!'y are often refer·red to as thP. meat breeds. Brahm:t~, Cochlns ancl Langshans make up the breeds in thi9. class. The English class, while not as common as the other three already referred to, probably rank fourth In popularity. These birds are medium In s-ize, have red ear lobes, clean legs that are pink In the buf'E and white varieties and black In the black 'arleties. The breeds making up this class are Orpingtons, Dorkings, Red Caps, Sussex and Cornish.
