The huge steam shovel accomplishes in a few momen ts what it would take hours of back-br eaking .toil for the laborer to perform . The progres s of retailin g, however, has been no less rapid and the service ren dered by the one small Store of the J. C. Penney Company, 25 years ago seems insignific ant compar ed with the service which the pr_esent 885 stores are today renderi ng a nation. We are proud of our growth which is due, not to our efforts alone, but to the needs of millions of people for the kind of service we give. • !Vlay our 885 Stores play their part in the Tomorr ow of Retailing with the same high ideals that began in a little country store, a quarter of a century ago. EDITORIA L Right Living We cannot all be chemists, dietitians, expert physiologist s, or phy· sicians. But we can be close ob. servers, and, ve•y few habits can be of more practical worth. Careful observation is a duty, every direlection of which, brings its pen· alty. Most of our grown-up people have, or have had long-lived ancestors. We may have noticed how they cared for themselves in the matter of health; their example is wo•thy of being followed. If your parents died young, you should note the probable causes, and avoid such in your own in· stance. ./A Our pioneers ate three meals a day, slept all night, worked all day, and, most of them died of old age -not of "heart disease" nor at the steering-wh eel; they wore sensible foot-wear and clothing· they ate plain food, lived t~mperately. These are traits which our modern generation seems to have forgotten. It is little wonder that we encounter the grim destroyer at ages little past the prime of manhood· the man who dies before he reache~ sixty-five or seventy years succumbs to an entirely preve~table condition; we must look far ahead -but we do not. We are a band of fool experimente rs; we try the "no-breakfa st plan;" we try the six o'clock dinner-tha t causea more deaths than cancer! We hear somebody say two meels a day are co•rect>--we follow the fad,. dist. We work when we should be resting, and rest when we sh >ul.d be employed physically. We o ·~ work the brain, and under-exerd lf• the animal structures; when s:t.d we return to the realm of comm::~ sense? It is a pity that, the !1 ' , <Cities, to which we are all rushing for mad "careers", are not the na,.o tural habitat of Man I ' .Jim Week: P·• I P.oi80Diat , One of the greatest menaces t~ the existing civilization such as we know that word in the United States is the ap~arent disregard for law and order. Tht~ extends from the disregard of natwnal laws, to State and municipal laws. ~~thing is more dangerous or undermmm g than this American lack ?f respect for the rule of tile majortty. If ~m~rica.n ideals of democracy are to extst m the future somethin.g must be done to teach the children in our public schools, to teach the grown folks, to teach one and all that only by ~he strict obedience to rules, regulattpn s of the majority can this repubhc be made perpetual and everlast mg. We have had an example i,n the city of Midvale the I>ast few days of this lac~ of respec~, this ignoring of civic duties. A busmess man of this town violated a city ordinance relating to the installation of electrical fixtures. It i~ said he failed to secure a permit to mstall them in his premises and • that the electrician who i.nstalled the fixtures was not licensed to do such work as required by the ordinances and the work was covered up without being duly inspected to see that the work was properly and carefully done acc?rding to the requiremen ts of the ordmance. Imagine, i,n a picture show house, where the lives of many people must be safeguarded from fire, in a public show house, of all places, should be properly inspected for defects in wiring. We do not know this w.as done with intent to disregard the ordinances but they were disregarded just the same and the requisite steps were complet"d afterwards. The Midvale City ordinances provide a penalty as follows: Sec~ion 988. PENALTY. Any per~ o~ vwlating any of the provisions of th1s ordinance shall, upon conviction •hereof, be punished by a fine in any >urn not exceeding fifty dollars, or by imprisonme nt in the City J:nl for a neriod not longer than thirty days. The Court may, in imposing a fine, onter as a part of the judgment, that in default of the payment of the fine the defendant may, be imprisoned in t he City Jail for a period not exceeding- thirtv days. Was thiR done? The Journal be•;eves in law enforcemen t and callR to •he attention of the Citv Electrician, Lhe City Councilmen and the Court. "hat in this instance the penalty of the law WaF; disrettarded . If it h; the purnose to ig-nore laws ;nd ordinance Fl. wh" have them?
