Show 1 Q "r W; Hilltop..;.. November 12, 1998 page 17 Finally, at 6:45 a.m., horns started blaring and the race was under way! At first it was like a herd of cattle. We gained a slight walking movement and suddenly came to a halt. Once again the crowd began a slow walk, watching not to trip over each other. As we finally crossed the official starting line I was just about speed walking. Sensors that we laced into our shoes were tracking our time. This allowed for accurate tracking and prevented cheating by those who might be tempted to do from Marathon, You could tell that many runners were in severe pain, yet they continued to press on. By now, I knew I would ' finish, but two miles seemed like an eternity. The locals had sprinklers, water hoses, and plenty of cheering for the runners coming through town. As I made the final turn toward the finish line, an enormous amount of emotion built up in me. I could see the bright red gates, and the crowds of people lining them. All I wanted to do was cross that line and find my family. As I neared the finish line I gave it my last ounce of energy and opened up in a short sprint. My official time was 3:54. The runners waiting area looked like a battle zone, but we had finished, and no one could take that away. A month has passed since the race, but it continues to be part of my memories. Not only for the many hours of training, but also for the friendships I made along so. The one thing that kept going through my mind was how much energy was coming off this crowd of over 3,900 runners. I couldn't believe that after 8 months of hard training I was finally here! It was still quite dark at the start of the race, and we were running into a fairly constant head wind coming from the south. I began working on my breathing and trying to edge myself ahead in the crowd. It wasn't until several miles into the run that I began to pick up a consistent pace. There were volunteers at each mile point along the way, and fruit and water were available every other mile. I started taking water at each stop and would grab an orange slice, as I needed it. As we hit the first uphill grade, the crowd of runners thinned even more. I continued to concentrate on my pace, passing a few runners here and there. I met several of the Hill runners along the way and took time to chat as we ran. Many of us played cat and mouse, passing each other along the course of the race. As we neared the mark, the course turned to the east, coming around the mountains and we found ourselves running into the early morning sun. I began to warm up rapidly and this, along with my tiring legs, was beginning to take its toll on me. It seemed more like a mind game than anything else. By the time we hit the mark, we were headed down into town, and the crowds were more abundant. the way. I am now looking forward to my next marathon, and the experiences that will come with it.
