Show 18 HMtop5 July 23. 1998 USAFE post offices commemorate airlift RAM STEIN AIR BASE, Germany (AFNS) Military post offices will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift by selling the Berlin Airlift Stamp beginning June 27. The U.S. Air Forces in Europe Air Postal Squadron created two pictorial cancellations for the special event: one for Berlin and one for Rhein-Mai-n Air Base. The pictorial cancellations will only be used with the new U.S Postal Service Berlin Airlift 50th anniversary commemorative postage stamp. The stamp became available at all U.S. post offices on June 27. The stamp features a Skymaster landing at Tempelhof Airport during the Berlin Airlift, watched by a family of Berlin-er4 s. The U.S. Postal Service uses the official cancellation stamps to postmark mail. The postmark is printed over the postage stamp on a piece of mail to render the stamp useless, and record the date and place where the mail originated. Postal patrons may receive the special cancellation through Sunday. Free USAFE Berlin Airlift postcards will also be available at Air Force post offices in Europe. "Our idea is to offer people a Berlin Airlift postcard as they purchase the Berlin Airlift commemorative stamp and then, if they wish, apply the pictorial cancellation stamp," said Col. Ray Shepherd, USAFE Public Affairs director. Specific instructions will be available at USAFE post offices. Post offices will individually forward the Berlin or Rhein-Mai- n pictorial cancellation requests (cards and letters) for cancellation to the Berlin APO and Rhein-Mai- n APO depending on customer ft in r I -- preference. The USPS cancellation requests are also first-day-ol-iss- available through USPS, said Yvonne Radloff, public affairs representative for the USAFE Air Postal Squadron at Ramstein. USAFE officials expect a large demand for the commemorative items, and customer lines at the post offices may be longer than usual. There is no need to rush, as pictorial cancellations are offered for 30 days and commemo- rative stamps are normally available for one year, Radloff said, v expect this offer to be extremely popular with stamp collectors and postmark collectors," she added. The stamp design is based on an actual photograph which appeared in the New York Times. The Allied airlift, unofficially named Operation began on June 26, 1948, when 32 carried 80 tons of food flights of and supplies into Berlin. The made up the heart of the airlift and were later joined by the larger and faster which were capable of hauling 10 tons. On May 12, 1949, the Soviets reopened land and water routes into Berlin, but the aircraft continued until Sept. 30 in order to build a reserve of supplies.
