Show Base volunteers thanked during recognition ceremony - by Sue Berk Hilltop Times assistant editor students and teachers, grading art projects, working with the school's reader thanks to the more than 1 ,500 volunteers who share their time and talent to make the base a better place to live and work at the annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony April 21. "We're here for a special purpose to say thanks to a large group of special people," said Tom Miner, Ogden ALC executive director. "To those of you here that volunteer, we are here to say thank you." "You (volunteers) are heroes because you do what you do and don't get paid for it," said Ed Brisley, Family Support Center director. In recognition of the outstanding achievements given by volunteers, the celebration was part of an annual nationwide emphasis on volunteers who make a difference in the quality of life for all people. One person making a difference at Hill is Lea Burgess. To recognize her efforts, she received the Air Force Volunteer ing with children in need, assisting with school fund raisers and organizing picture days. She was nominated for the award by Judy Nixon, Hill Field Elementary School principal. She received a signed plaque from Gen. Michael E. Ryan, Air Force Chief of Staff; a gift certificate from Lay-to- n Hills Mall and a bouquet of flowers. Judges for the award were MSgt. Sal-li- e Hill AFB gave a special r to Excellence Award. The win at Hill AFB, the excellence award was established by the U.S. Air Force first-eve- Chief of Staff to recognize federal civilians, family members and military and federal retirees who perform outstanding volunteer community service in a local civilian or military community. The service must be significant in character, produce tangible results and reflect favorably on the U.S. Air Force. Burgess won the award for the six years of volunteer service she gave to Hill Field Elementary School. Hill AFB volunteers serve base organizations as well as other groups affiliated with the base. They include the Ski Meet, Thrift Shop, Officer and Enlisted Spouse Clubs, Scouting Programs, STARS (Students and Teachers for the Advancement of Reading Skills) Retiree Affairs, Hispanic Outreach Program, American Red Cross, Hill Field Elementary School, Youth Center and Family Support Center. Each recipient was given a certificate and congratulated by Miner and Ora Spencer, wife of Col. Larry Spencer,.75th Air Base Wing Commander. The ceremony also included the Hill , AFB Honor Guard posting colors; music by SSgt. Timothy Schmidt, 388th Maintenance Squadron; and the invocation by Chaplain (Maj.) Robert Higginbotham, 75th ABW.
