The first jet aircraft the Shooting Star arrived at Hill in 1946. That year also marked the first renaming of Hill's parent command from Air Technical Services Command to the Air Materiel Command. Another historical note 1946 saw the opening of the first public museum at Hill. Officially opened on April 6, the museum displayed equipment that had been used in all the theaters during World War II. By the time the U.S. Air Force was officially inaugurated in 1947, Hill Field had already proven its value to the nation, and its ability as a major component of America's air power. Starting next week, we'll provide brief glimpses of the years between the birth of the Air Force and our 50th anniversary celebration. We hope you enjoy this extended stroll down memory lane.
