Every year, Christmas becomes a very sad season for many families because of accidents. But with a little effort, many of these tragedies can be avoided. The National Fire Safety Administration reports about 500 fires each year and $9 million in damage due to fires caused by Christmas tree accidents. What's worse, they report some 20 lives lost annually to the same cause. Other accidents can cause bruises, cuts, and much worse. Safety should begin even before you put up your tree. Check Christmas lights every year for cracks in the insulation and broken bulbs. Be sure they're approved by Underwriters' Laboratories or a similar organization. Check ornaments for breaks and cracks that could cause cuts. And select a location that's not near heat registers, radiators or fireplaces that can dry out a fresh tree. with colored lights placed away from the tree. After you've checked your lights and ornaments and chosen a place for your tree, be sure you have a suitable stand. Natural trees require daily watering, so be sure the stand has an adequate dish for water. Be sure whether your tree is natural or artificial that the stand is large enough to hold the tree up. Cut about two inches off the bottom of a natural tree to allow it to absorb water. And be sure to add fresh water daily. As you put the tree in the stand, be sure it is balanced and stable. Consider tying the tree in place using a strong nylon, and cup Selection of a Christmas tree means a thread or string, perhaps wood. into screwed hooks lot when it comes to safety.
