Why does this M 17 Family Support Center offerings by Nancy Brewer ( Hilltop Times happen? A seminar, "Communication Between the Sexes." Tuesday. 11:30 a.m.-- l p.m., at the Family Support Center, will provide some insight on the different ways men and women communicate. Mary Talboys, University of Utah Neuropsychiatry Institute social worker, will explain how understanding these differences can improve communication between the sexes. The uniqueness of each human being creates opportunities and problems in personal and work communication. Each person has a preconceived idea on how relationships "should be." Because of this, couples are quite surprised when simple communication becomes clouded. Historically, men have been the aggressors and providers. These roles have them functioning as problem solvers, fixers and doers and they communicate with this direct, fix-i- t style. Women on the other hand, have traditionally been the nurturers and caretakers. They want to talk about problems and approach communication from a relationship style. If you feel these differences often result in a breakdown of communication and add stress to your relationships, this seminar may be for you. For more information or to register call Ext. Mind over stress Individuals who would like to techlearn healthy niques are invited to "Mind Over Stress," April 27, 11:30 a.m.-- l p.m.. stress-reducin- g at the Family Support Center, Bldg. 308. Steve Havertz, social worker. Layton Care Center, will look at internal and external stressors, the primary causes of stress and how to effectively deal with stressors. Stress can't be avoided, but it's possible to manage it by using coping techniques. The death of a loved one, difficulties in relationships, loss of employment or getting a new job are all examples of what can cause stress; however, they are not stress itself. The same event can cause different responses in different people. What stresses one person may not stress another. Stress is not necessarily bad. It can provide the motivation to overcome an obstacle or reach a goal. To register for this seminar or for more information call Ext. Coping with suicide The Family Support Center is hosting a seminar. "Understanding Suicide." Wednesday. 8 p.m. Pat and Lee Ericksen from Legacy, a suicide support group, will talk about suicide, signs to look for and offer suggestions on how to cope in stressful situations. Suicide is not the result of one unhappy moment, but rather a buildup of misery in a person's mind over a period of time days, weeks, months or even years. Then some adverse environmental influence, even a minor one, tips the 6-- balance. There is no sure way to tell if someone is going to commit suicide, but there are symptoms and signs that can indicate a suicide risk. A change in personality, sleep patterns and appetite are a few indications that a person may be depressed and thinking of suicide. According to the Utah Depart ment of Health, Office of Public Health Data Bureau of Vital Records, in 1993, 264 people chose to take their own lives in Utah 63 were between the ages of 1 5 and 24 and 184 between the ages of 15 and 44. Attempting suicide is a sign that a person does not feel capable of living. Any cry for help should be taken seriously. Help is available and knowing what to do could save a life.
