Voting does take a little effort. You've got to register and then you've got actually enter the booth and punch the card or mail in your absentee ballot. If you don't know how to register or how to vote absentee, contact your unit voting representative (see story, next page). Voting intelligently means paying attention-watch- ing conventions and debates on TV, local newspapers or attending local reading debates. I made these up. 1 But seriously, it doesn't matter what excuse a person offers for not voting. There's no good reason, just excuses. If you doubt that, replay in your mind the tears of joy running down the faces of Eastern Europeans and former Soviet citizens as their communist governments disintegrated. Remember crowds cheering as men and women with hammers chipped off pieces of the Berlin Wall, then exultation as the wall came tumbling down. Vote because a compass points north. Once you're determined to have a voice in who will lead you, any reason will do. For whatever reason, choose to vote. And if you don't vote, don't complain when politicians make decisions that adversely affect you. Remember that by remaining silent, you gave your consent.
