Lester Lyles named new vice commander of Hill AFB - Because of a lower WASHINGTON (AFNS) than needed response to separation incentives from both officers and enlisted members, the Air Force has decided to extend the Voluntary Separation Incentive and Special Separation Benefit programs. According to 2nd Lt. Maureen Glenn with Hill AFB's personnel office, members have through May 29 to now sign up for one of the two programs. "The programs are also being expanded to include more people who were not previously eligible in phase I of the program," Glenn said. Air Force personnel officials said they're continuing the program for another month to minimize the scope of an involuntary reduction in force. After closing the original VSI and SSB offer, the Air Force found it still needed nearly 3,800 officer applications and almost 2,800 enlisted applications. To meet required the Air Force was to and officers 24,000 enlisted hoping get 7,500 members to take the offers. Without extending VSI and SSB, these numbers would translate to officer and enlisted involuntary RIF requirements. Officials hope to reduce or eliminate these RIFs by getting as many volunteers end-strength- s, as possible. He replaced Col. Michael Navarro, who is retiring from the Air Force. The ceremony, which was presided over by Lt. Gen. Thomas A. Baker, commander of the 12th Air Force, marked the 43rd time a new commander has taken the reins of the 388th Fighter Wing. Unlike many of his predecessors, however, Sandstrom is no newcomer to Hill AFB and Utah. He first came to Hill in 1981 when he was assigned to the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron.
