Not the toughest to kill or the biggest, but the smartest, most wary, hardest to find and most challenging of them all. No, we're not talking wild sheep, mountain goat cauuu a aic wuuiicsu wupny we nave IS... oi" iiiipui the turkey. OK, right now, some of you are snickering. You've heard all kinds of turkey jokes. You've heard that farm-raiseturkeys are so dumb they stand in the rain looking up until they drown. You've been called a turkey and felt insulted. But none of that applies to the wild turkey. Friend, there is no such thing as a silly wild turkey. There is absolutely, positively no such thing as a stupid wild turkey. Experienced turkey hunters say that the senses of a wild turkey put a whitetail's to shame and make a muley seem deaf and blind. The turkey can see better, hear better and hide better. If he could smell, nobody on earth could ever get close enough to kill one with a shotgun. Indeed, a turkey's senses are the stuff of legends. It's been said that a turkey can see a man's eye blink at a hundred yards. See it? Sheeoooot. He can HEAR it. And when he sees or hears you? He can outrun a horse, and seems to instinctively put trees, rocks or whatever between himself and you while he does it. Running not gonna hack it? He is among the world's fastest fliers, faster than a mallard despite his pounds. And when he's too smart to do either, he can simply evaporate. A wild turkey could disappear from the middle of a golf green. Here in the West, getting a deer most every year is no great accomplishment. But for most hunters anywhere, getting a turkey even once every several years isn't just an accomplishment it's grounds for adulation (or suspicion) among one's peers. Show me someone who bags a turkey on a regular basis, and I'll show you a Hunter. cies. Much of the credit goes to the National Wild Turkey Federation, whose Utah chapter offers seminars, teaching programs and helpful programs and helpful hints for novice hunters in addition to their conservation work. Meetings are posted in local papers. Attend and you might even meet someone to take you out once or twice. Learning the basics of turkey hunting isn't difficult, even though becoming a successful turkey hunter definitely is. We'll be covering some of those basics in our next column. In the meantime, give turkey hunting some d 20-pl- thought. Once you've been not only skunked, fooled and even made to look downright stupid by a gimlet-eye- d gobbler, you'll begin to understand why Ben Franklin campaigned for the wild turkey as our na- tional symbol. And the next time someone calls you a turkey, you ' just might feel complimented. You can get to be that good, fer mvm JET3 Vi SALT LAKE CITY The Dolores Triangle, a portion of Grand County in Southeastern Utah, has been closed to spring turkey hunting. Division of Wildlife Resources director Tim Provan said the closure was necessary to protect wild turkeys released there last January. The area will reopen to turkey hunting when a population has become established. The remainder of Grand County, south of the Dolores and Colorado rivers, will be open to turkey hunting. The spring turkey hunting season starts Tuesday and ends May 20. 3 Heart ft?)
