Show by Ralph C. Jensen Ogden ALC Public Affairs Office There's something new in the Hill AFB environment a directorate which will combine all the environmental program arenas that affect the base. Officials at the newly-create- d Directorate of Environmental Management, or EM, will deal directly with water and air quality, radiation and hazardous waste issues. "It's our duty to watch anything that's going to impact the quality of the environment at this base. We're the single focal point," Nathan Currier, new director of environmental management, said. "In the past, these programs were fragmented in various areas and really never had the visibility," he said. "Now they'll get public awareness. This also means the Air Force is very much interested in operating within the requirement of regulatory agencies." Mr. Currier was formerly deputy at the 2849th Civil Engineering Squadron. He said EM workers will be able to get to the "grass roots" of base environmental issues. "We'll be able to act on issues smartly and do it in a way that will not impact our environment," Mr. Currier said. "Our mission is to act in a way that will show the Air Force is concerned about these key issues and programs. The Air Force has taken action to elevate those needs to the proper level so that everyone becomes aware of them and so we can all tune." gather and march to the same directorate-level a of office He said development will give the program visibility. This is the first time an environmental budget has been drawn to stand on its own. Previously, the program had been a branch organization and relied on others for support. EM workers will gather information from several base agencies, combining expertise, facts and figures at a single focus. Information will be passed to EM employees, who will focus on mission responsibilities. "We're getting money to deal with problems like hazardous waste," he said. "We've been told to deal with the problems and given the resources to do it. I think we'll make a real impact on environmental issues, making Hill a quality place to work." Daniel O. Graham. The general presented the seminar titled "Strategic Defense: Defending Our Nation Against Nuclear Missiles" at the base theater last Friday. "Of the services behind SDI, the Air Force should make it work. It must be the prime mover and things are mov ing in the right direction," he said. SDI is ready to deploy now. The only thing in the way is a political decision, General Graham, founder of the I High Frontier research organization, said. He said scientists are wrong to say SDI isn't possible and that what they are really saying is that a 100 percent perfect defense is impossible. He suggested those same people are questioning the necessity of change. "Sure, we can't get a 100 percent effective defense. Things are changing fast. But one thing that must change, in favor of our country, is who shall pro-SD- work SOB Russian would attack if he knew only a small portion of his missiles were going to get through. "SDI opponents contend it's safer to have no defense, that enemies are less likely to attack if one is 'utterly vulnerable.' We've seen the Chernobyl disaster, a fire aboard a Soviet submarine off our coast with 16 nuclear missiles pointed at us and at least two Soviet missiles go astray and hit other countries," the general said. "Space is a frontier open to adventurers and explorers. It's man's adventuresome spirit that brought about the competition for a position in space," the general said.
