Some people will take the best advice, buy the most sophisticated equipment and then throw away their chances with a bad terminal rig. First of all, a terminal rig means the way the hook(s) and weight, plus leader, are attached to the main line. Most bad rigs allow the fish to steal the bait before the fisherman knows it, or allows the fish to escape if it is caught. The worst system involves tying the hook to the end of the line, then tying in a weight above that. Now, listen close, because that is also the best system. The difference is that the best system allows the weight to slide up the main line. In fact, it's called the sliding sinker rig. In the bad system, the fish has to pull the bait and leader runners. If a reasonably short leader is used, there are few fish that can steal bait from such a rig. To keep the sinker from sliding all the way down the hook while casting, the main line is passed through the sinker, then tied to a barrel swivel, or any such large loop, then the leader is tied to that. ; The sliding sinker rig can be used in most fishing circumstances, the exception being a very rough surf. By varying the shape or weight of the sinker, you can do almost anything with it. Even catch fish. .'t " $7 for nonmembers. By Heather l i : Utah Division of Wildlife Resources The Division of Wildlife Resources is using reflectors to reduce the number of deer killed on Utah highways. In the state, more than 3,000 of the animals are lost annually to vehicle collisions. Swareflex reflectors, strategically located along highways where vehicledeer collisions are most likely to occur, have lowered the number of T-sh-irt r vehicledeer accidents in several states and countries, according to W.lk.r ' i G A Little Credit Larry Dalton, resource analyst with theDWR. . "The reflectors gather light from car headlights and bounce a red beam onto the roadside, where deer often feed,'' said Dalton. "What the deer see is not yet clear, but researchers speculate that in most animals the color red signifies a warning." The DWR's experiment with Swareflex reflectors is believed to be the largest single study of its kind in the United States. Thirty-si- x miles of reflectors have been installed along several major highways in the state. Similar methods have been used by wildlife agencies in Colorado and Idaho with an 80 percent reduction in deer. In highway kills of white-taile- d addition, both states have shown a 41 to 61 percent reduction of mule deer mortalities on highways in areas where the reflectors are used. 51 hi BILL'S SHEET METAL ive Yourself LAYTON .
