But I'm finding that I like the computer better. Time is money and now Competition Advocacy (CR) saves both with a new computer-aide- d design system. The equipment called a Computer Aided DesignComputer Aided Manufacturing (CADCAM) system-w- as purchased this year and installed in the CR offices of six draftsmen and 14 engineers. Ralph Wiggins, a professional draftsman for 22 years, said the new system is the best invention since pen and ink. "I didn't want them to take my drafting table away," he said. "But I'm finding that I like the computer better. It's just a matter of learning the language to get what you want." Don Woods, chief, Engineering Branch, Directorate of Competition Advocacy, said the $1 million system will do the work two to three times faster than pen and ink. It was purchased through Productivity, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability funds. Competition Advocacy, he explained, saves Air Force dollars by fostering competition. The CADCAM system will save even more than the millions already saved by reverse engineering because of their efficiency, according to the PRAM report. Before the computers, branch engineers manually analyzed the part and gave that information to branch draftsmen. The draftsmen manually completed the drawings which were eventually released through the Air Force for future procurement. While the process has stayed the same, the CADCAM system speeds it up. Draftsman Debbie Phillips said she can do in "three days what it used to take me three weeks." And in addition to speed, the draftsmen and engineers are finding that the computers are a lot neater. "There's no longer the hassle of erasers all over the place," said Mr. Wiggins. "It's mind boggling what this tiling ......
