This provides control over unauthorized customer access by making sure the customer uses their own Social Security number to make acquistions. "A letter of authorization is required for each individual allowed to purchase supplies and tools," said Mr. Rice. Social Security number by input." Checking out with the purchased items is simple as well. The checker simply waves a laser wand over the bar code which automatically checks out the item. That also speeds up checkouts and reduces waiting and wasted manhours. And the customer is provided with a printed "grocery list" of what items are bought and their prices. "The APOS system can create an issue in 12 seconds as opposed to the old way which required a card and several minutes of time," said Mr. Rice. "We produce all our own bar code labels with a new bar code printer. This gives us tighter inventory control. Customers also get an cost receipt. "The new system is also cheaper to use. Some of the items that were purchased before were worth less than the time it took to check them out. This system is a good deal and it will save a great deal of money," he said. item-by-ite- m The country store provides service in all activities on base, local Air Force ROTCs, recruiting offices in the area, the Red Cross and the Defense Mapping Agency. "We expect worldwide implementation by January of 1988. Our successes prove it can be accomplished," said Mr. Rice. Testing of the system was done at Gunter AFB, Ala., in conjunction with the testing at Hill. The system has been implemented at MacDill AFB, Fla.
