With 25 staffers, the local office of the Air Force Audit Agency peruses the books of every organization on base. They also check the financial records of other Air Force organizations such as the Air National Guard in Salt Lake City. "We're not here to pat people on the back," said Lt. Col. Charles Lockhart, chief, area audit office. "We are a management tool to determine how well organizations are using their funds and if everything is proper. For that reason, we are independent of any commander at Hill." The Air Force Audit Agency is a separate operating agency under the Secretary of the Air Force. The auditors provide worldwide management assistance at locations throughout the world. According to the auditor general in Washington, D.C., "Our mission is to perform internal audits at any location, any level and any organization. We help Air Force managers make efficient use of resources, retain financial integrity and accomplish management objectives." At Hill, those objectives boil down to some 30 groups requiring auditing from time to time. "Last year, we turned in 45 audit reports," said Colonel Lockhart. "This year, we will probably finish 65 reports." That's equal to 4,000 man days, he said. It all begins with a survey to local commanders to determine auditing needs. After researching the It. Col.
